Default New guy with some questions.

Hi all,

A friend I work with pointed me over here. I think he posts in the 924 area? Anyway, I recently acquired a 1980 5 speed. It was the cheap white one on ebay the other day. I picked it up yesterday from NYC and am taking a cursory look at it now. I'm very familiar with German cars (two Audis), but have never owned a Porsche. I found the battery and changed that. My next question is how do you add oil? I found the dipstick at least. I would have looked in the manual, but I haven't found that yet either...

Thanks,
John

congratulations on your purchase, myself I believe that the early 5 speeds are the best ones.

Congratulations on finding th ebattery, that took me a long time....

The oil filler is a big yellow cap between the cylinders heads and near the front of the car.

If you want to make lots of friends here then I suggest you try the search facilty before asking too many questions

Welcome. Sounds like you've got a long road ahead of you. Hopefully you'll enjoy it.

If you don't have an owner's manual, you might as contact Jim Morehouse and buy his workshop manuals CD, which also has owner's manuals and bunches of other interesting stuff. His forum name is "Jim Morehouse," so you could send a PM, or I believe his email is jim928@ptd.net.

My car is going into storage tomorrow, but hopefully we'll be able to meet in the spring.

Remove the top of the oil separator and add oil there. It's the can with the yellow plastic screw on top in the pic below.

Thanks guys. I did try and do some searching. I'm guessing it's a dumb enough thing that people don't ask? She was two quarts low. Now to see if it will start, or catch fire, or both.

John,

Welcome to the asylum. I highly recommend the CDs from Jim Morehouse. A wealth of information on your PC. Also do some searches at 'The big 3'. They have lots of technical info and are very helpful. Good luck.

By the way, this forum is awesome. The people are really patient with newbies like me and you.

Hum. I should have expected this I guess. The dash lights up, but there isn't a hint of it even attempting to crank. I'll be buying those CDs...

Don't be discouraged. A lot of 928s fall into this catergory. Often, it's just bad grounding points. Do a search for Wally Plumley's Annual Maintenance Tips on 928s and follow that (Nichol's 928 site?). Once you've covered all those bases, you'll have the easy stuff out of the way.

Lots of people ask dumb questions; mostly me.

There are some really good 928 links listed here http://tinyurl.com/y8g726

Read the new visitor thread. Lots of informative stuff there about the car. Post #33 or so is a list of ground points. That is significant enough to be posted outside of the other self help sites, which are: Nichols http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm and pirtle, http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/keepers.html

HTH.

Welcome John. Unfortunately (or fortunately) 928s tend to be a journey, not a destination. A Hundai with a five year warrenty is a destination. Try to relax and enjoy the process.
