Default Door Panel recovered

I just finished recovering this door panel in navy blue leather. The speaker covers are 1/4 inch MDF and nylon fabric.

Hey, anyone have one of the middle of the door inserts? (the 2ft x 4" rectangle piece) I need the passenger side, black if possible. (in any kind of shape)
thanks,

Mk

very nice, looks like some nice hide's too, I love the smooth stuff, not a big fan of the overly grainy stuff.

Not a fan of putting crests all over the place though but if it works for you then great.

Where do you get good hides guys? I would be willing to pay $300 per hide for some well finished vat dyed hides, but where do you get stuff? I figure someplace in LA has to have rolls of stuff. (aside from GAAH which charges $600 per hide)

I was also looking for a leather supply place, figured downtown would be crawling with them, but not the cast. I was going down Pico and was turning onto La Cienega and for the first time in my life something of value was on a Bus stop Bench ad. On South LaBrea there's what claims to be LA's largest fabric supply store for the public. I called and they do have auto grade leather. I want to say it's on the 200 block of South LaBrea. I feel like they said between Beverly and 6th which would be about right. I'm actually going to hunt for it tomorrow, when I find it, I'll post the addy.,

Very nice work, Rob! I look forward to seeing more when you come to our area!

I agree with Ryan that too many crests do not bring visual gain but clutter. Sometimes less is more, and this seems to be an example.

From what I've found out about hides, some of which can be confirmed and some is hearsay. (in random order)
Porsche has specifications for the process including the grain design they supply to tanneries that do their leather.
They do the same for the vinyl.
Porsche spec leather has some unique properties that other leather doesn't have such as the black leather having some kind of antiglare property (unconfirmed). I did find out that some small aircraft manufacturers prefer Porsche black leather for the dash in small aircraft due to this feature.

There are no tanneries in the US that use the Porsche specs that I know of. So far all the leather I've used came from Germany.

If you find good quality leather like Porsche spec leather the colors don't always match.
I've lost jobs when quoting Porsche leather to other trimmers using cheaper domestic leather. Some customers just don't know or care. They think leather is leather.

German cows are bigger than US cows. German Porsche hides run between 55 and 65 square feet. Domestic hides run 45-55 sq ft.

They don't use barbed wire in Germany so there are less holes and scars in German leather. More of the hide is clear and useable than a domestic hide.(hearsay)

Porsche leather is easier to work with compared to some other hides. I've tried some other German hides, the stuff used by Mercedes I think. It was tough to form, wasn't colorfast and didn't seem to have as much durability.

The cost for leather varies with the quality and you get what you pay for. At $4-5 a square foot don't expect above average quality. Porsche leather runs $6-10 a square foot depending on quantity.

I can save you a few dollars by having GAHH drop ship a hide to you. BTW I can do that with all the stuff they sell, hides, carpet, seat kits, vinyl, etc.

Its always been stated that Rolls Royce only use hides from Sweden because they don't use barbed wire & every other country does , don't know about Germany.

My un-expert view of 928 leather is that it is inferior to Jaguar, Range Rover, Volvo (makes I have dealings with), comparing similar ages & mileages the 928 seats are worn out & the others still good.

Rolls Royce says there is less insect damage to the animals' skin in Sweden since they don't have flies constantly biting and attacking the cows. FWIW.

yeah i dont think porsche leather is the best. FWIW i always prefered RR leather for obvious reasons. It used to be Connelly but they closed shop 5-6 years ago finally. I dont think the leather in even a new turbo is anything to write home about. I prefer the fine grain stuff thats very soft, typically the porsche stuff ive seen is fairly grainy which some people prefer but i think it looks less refined.

Interesting on the observations about the larger german cows and the use of barbed wire, i never thought of those things but that makes sense in the end product. Good tidbits to know.

Are you going to make coverings for the fold-out door pulls as well?
