Re. the spare tire amp box:
RedUFO had posted detailed dimensions for building your own box.
As a general guide, 1 10" sub is the best match for the spare tire location. Anything larger and you are well over the height of the hatch deck.

That was the only thread I found that had a description. I thought maybe somebody made a detailed tutorial.

I made a sub enclosure to fit tightly in the wheel well opening (without the spare of course). I used oak plywood and cut it on a radial arm saw so it could be custom curved. The volume is just a little smaller than it should be for the 12" DVC JLAudio sub, but it sounded great just the same. My sub and amp racks only stuck up 2.5" off the floor of the hatch. I planned to make a cover for the top of everything but didn't get around to it. The cover would have been much like a monopoly game board, kind of a cardboard/fiberboard material with vinyl covering.
The sub is located under the metal grill in the lower left of the picture.
I also made a custom fiberglass enclosure that I installed in front of my pedals, covered with carpet.
All of my equipment was taken out of my S4 before I sold it and is now just sitting unused. This was the best car audio system I ever heard. I just can't bring myself to load it all into my GTS.

If you search for Adam B and subwoofer you will see what Rob Fossett pioneered. Custom made fiberglass sub enclosure that uses the spare tire as a speaker grill. It still sticks up about an 1inch or so..but keeps the spare and sounds awesome..

P.S. Search for RedUFO to find the dimensions of the sub box I made..

Hmmm, I have a pair of PPI 12's in storage with an ideal enclosure space of only .4 cubic feet per sub. Perfect for the spare setup.

Normal human beings will see no benefit of any kind in a woofer larger than 6 to 8 inches when mounted loaded into the rear corner of a hatchback. There is no good "musical" reason that any interior space or the original look of the 928 needs to be lost in the pursuit of high quality sound.
I know a lot of people and shops really go for it, but from a sound standpoint its often dangerous and unproductive show.

We own 928's - the "normal" aspect is already out the window
Benefit or not - my friends GTI with 10 twelve inch subs sounds pretty damn good to my ears.

I didn't say it wouldn't sound good, just no better than single 6 to 8 inch driver. A single good 12" driver in a 928 sized interior should be able to hit 135 db, and the point of that is what? 115 to 120 is plenty for my tastes. I'd rather leave the interior stock looking and keep all the space.

It's really easy to add a sub without making a whole box. The spare tire well can be the enclosure itself, just seal a 3/4 MDF top on it like I did. Sits flat so stock carpet can be used. At almost 1.75 cubes the tire well is perfect for most single 10's or even 12's.
I can send "ProBox" to anyone who want's it for free. Just plug in your speaker of choice and it's parameters (If it's not already on the list) and it will help design the perfect box. Or tell you how the box you have will perform.
As for the big sub in the trunk..not all of us are purist.

Terra,
I know what you are saying & I do agree on "ratings" - I've had these PPI subs for about 10 years now - the .4 box was after much trial & error to find the best sound for my taste (this was in a 944). Notice I said "ideal" not "manufacture rated"
A friend of mine and I had a side business installing / building custom car systems. He's still into it, I jumped ship for reasons I cannot remember. Thinking about getting back into it every time I see my "stash" in the basement. I'm somewhat of a pack rat.
