Question New Tyre Tread Depth - Michelin MXX3

I've just been sold a pair of tyres that the seller claims have only 100 miles on them, unfortunately they only have 5mm tread left. What do new MXX3's have when new?

Thanks

Thanks Jim, I was wondering whether it might be 6mm like the PZero Cups I have. I guess I've been conned!

You may wish to determine the date of manufacture from the DOT code moulded into the sidewall ..... MXX3's have been out of production for several years IIRC ...

The date code is as follows and tires like milk do NOT get better with age....." Under the new Regulation, the first two symbols must identify the week of the year by using “01” for the first full calendar week in each year, “02” for the second full calendar week and so on. The final week of each year may include not more than 6 days of the following year. The last two symbols must identify the year. For example, 0101 means the first full calendar week of 2001, or the week of January 7 through 13, 2001.

According to the new specifications, the minimum size of the date code may be reduced from 6mm (1/4") to 4mm (5/32"). This allows the figures to fit the same space as the old 3-digit code. Although 4mm is the minimum size, there is no limit to how large ......" Tires after a few years are unsafe especially if not stored well.... Some well known mail order tire companies sell tires which are nearing the drop dead date as "closeouts".

It's possible that they were shaved -- some premium tire shops will shave a tire to a round shape after mounting. Not especially likely, but still possible.

I thought mxx3 were NLA, but I got a great deal today and I decided to replace my 6-year-old contis. Obviously, I didn't wanted to put old rubber in, so I checked the manufacture number: 1006.

So they are still in production, at least the 225/50/16. And pretty cheap for Spain prices.
