No, that's definitely overkill, but it has the huge advantage of being simple. 
A longer bolt should be plenty strong. Just be sure to use the same grade. You could step up to 8mm same grade if you're really worried about it, though clearance for the bolt head may be an issue and you'd have to weld a nut on a plate for the botom side, unless you can get a wrench in yours.
