Default Away for winter, but first I smell raw gasoline...

So the car is all cleaned up and up on jack stands for the winter. as I was getting under the car to look at the slight tranny fluid leak I noticed that I could smell raw fuel. I had just filled it but I know I didn't get it on me.

The plastic cover in the middle of the underside of the tank looks a bit like it maybe wet. what connections are under the plastic cover. How does the cover come off? I only looked quickly and wanted a little info before I look deeper into it.

Whatcha think? Vent tube shot, connections shot?

Hey Curt,

This is incredible. I have the same problem that I just now got on line to find some information.

Your car is newer than mine which is why I suspect tyou have a plastic cover, but underneath my metal cover is the connection to the in tank pump and the external pump itself. If the design is the same, the cover is held on with 4, 11mm nuts. There are also two other nuts that hold the pump to the cover. Undo those too and push the threaded bolts back into the cover. You can then remove the cover and all will be revealed.

Now to my question. It appears that my fuel leak is from the pump itself. Not the hoses or any of the fittings. Very slow leak, not even dripping, but enough to see a line of liquid inbetween the pump body and the pump end plate.

Is this a common failure mode?

Second question. What do people think about a used pump from 928 intl? Used $150, new $300 something.

I have had leaks on both of the 928's I have owned from this area. Both times it turned out to be the copper washers between the pump/ filter assembly. I ended up softening up the washers and reinstalled them with no leaks. The copper washers get work hardened and loose their sealing ability. You can buy new ones for very little $ or soften them by heating to red and letting them air cool. I cleaned them up with some emery cloth before I reinstalled them. Do a search and you will find more info on this process. That is how I learned of the procedure!

Hi replace the copper sealing washers on the pumplines carefully tighten the hose connections, this should take care of the leaks, also look under the tank running inside of the tank support,, there is a line that can get filled with dirt then if it gets wet it will rust out then start leaking

I have just taken a careful look with the pump running. The leak is very slow, maybe one drop every few minutes, if that. The leak is from the seal between the pump body and the pomp end plate.

Are these pumps rebuildable? Looks like the end plate is just swaged in place so disassembly/reassembly would not be easy.

Has anyone tried to reseal this joint, say with an epoxy like JB Weld?

Be very careful when torquing on various things down there because the final fitting between tank and outlet is plastic to metal. I turned mine slightly and got a good leak out of it. Rather than a new tank i t ried draining it and stuffing the knerled part back in with black Wynns silicone and it has held for 2 years.

Do you think that Wynn's Silicone would hold on the high pressure side of the pump?

Hi if the pump body is leaking then you will need a new pump they are factory sealed and the last thing you need is a pump leaking when its hot outside or over the winter into your garage,

Stan's right. The pumps are disposable. Sometimes a crudded up pump can be brought back to life but a leaker needs to go in the trash. If all the good advice above doesn't scare you into fixing it right, maybe this will:
