Hmmm... FI plug clip fell off

Bill, FWIW, look in the wiring harneses and vac lines in that area, I've misplaced the clips on my 81/16v many times, and they seem to get hung up in the local wiring or vac lines!

As i have experienced, Murphys Law says the intake you droppped it into had the valves open
Also, turn the crank via a wrench..if it stops youre pretty assured its in there. IF not you should be good to go as objects that fall in, tend to drop to the bottom half of the piston crown and at this point they will jam the piston at TDC becasue of the small squish band. An injecter clip is plenty thick enough to stop the motor at TDC. If turning the crank by hand works i would also blast a jet of air down the spark blug hole to perhaps position anything in there along the squish band..makig it easier to detect.

Dave, my wife is disappointed, but you won't need to sterilize the boroscope this weekend after all. I found the clip. Or let's say I saw the clip until I knocked further down into the front covers on the motor, somewhere behind the power steering pump.
Thanks for the suggestions. Good thinking, as always, Tony, about testing for valve seal. Glad I didn't have to.

Regardless, I do not think you will feel like you are 100% sure with either.
Glad you found it.

Glad you found your clip, Bill (whew). Yes, without spending thousands, you're going to get an imperfect view through a borescope -- and they are limited as to how tight a corner they will turn. Still, they can be very handy at times.

Sooooo...I was cleaning things up, getting ready to install the intake manifold, so proud of myself for finding the disclocated clip, when I looked down at another of the injector plugs....another clip was missing! ARGH!
Dave loaned me the boroscope. Blown87 was right - these things are not as useful as you really need. I can see the complete piston crown only if the piston is a bottom dead center. So, I need to rotate the motor to view all the suspect cylinders. Tonight I should finish examining all of them. I have poked all around the motor and cannot find the clip anywhere around it.

Bill,
Or have your wife hold you upside down and shake you, you will be amazed at whats falls out of your clothing! - I've found a few pieces of small hardware snagged up in mine :-)

Oh, I have magnets. If I spot anything, I will be dropping in magnets on a string with somehting like Tony's starw idea to push it arround. One problem - the clip is much larger than the spark plug hole, so I'll need to grab it with the magnet, pull it up near the hole and then grab it with LONG surgical forceps and force it through the hole. That will be a bit of work, since the magnet will obscure most of the plug opening. The valve opening is only a few mm, so you can't do much through there. In fact, looking at the valve pocket, it doesn't look like the clip would get through the opening all that easily. The clip is straight while the opening is curved and narrow.

Have you tried a gentle 360 of the crank with the plugs out to see if there is any point of resistance. I would think the size of the clip would stop it completely.

Yep, like I told you when you picked it up... Sometimes a 'scope will save your ***, other times they are worthless. If nothing else, it can be very handy for looking around and under things where you can't really get a mirror in, like inside the TB cover and other places that nobody but your wife would be willing to help you with.
