Default Loose front end?-Updated

How much movement is allowed in front wheels? I replaced new steering rack and inner/outer tie rods.
Changing oil last night, while both tires off the ground, I decided to check for wheel bearing play holding wheel at 12 and 6 oclock and it is tight. At the 3 and 9 oclock I noticed movement/slack and was surprised considering new parts.
Thanks

UPDATE:
Returned from Porsche mechanic, turns out the rebuilt rack is faulty, also leaking from pinion gear. I have less than 3 months of driving and 1300 miles. They agreed to replace rack with no labour.

Find the source of the movement. Some possibilities include:
- Rack mounts
- Worn bushings in the end of the rack housing. Not all rebuilds get new bushings...
- Normal movement in the rack and steering column - the only way to check this is to install the rack locking bolt in place of the plastic plug on the front of the rack.

Have somebody else move the wheel while you look underneith. Watch for the rack moving up and down (indicates Wally's first suggestion). If it's not moving, put your hand on the tie rod and see if it moves up and down (Wally's second). Not all racks get either type of bushing, internal or external.

Was the steering wheel tied down with a rope or otherwise restrained from moving?

If the rack's internal shaft bushings are not replaced as part of the rebuild, the shaft can move fore and aft in the rack when the wheel is moved at 3 and 9.

Mike, you're not the first to run into this issue.... glad to hear the shop did the right thing.

Should I ask to check for play after the install before alignment? I presume the rebuilt rack had play and let it go(fair assumption?). Dont want this hassle again. My new tires show no uneven wear after 1500 miles.
