That would work. Guess I was thinking of a new motor rebuild and there was no used belt in the 7 boxes of greasy parts that was the motor when you bought it. Then there could be the case where the sprockets are worn and those wore the belt more than "standard" wear, and you are needing to replace the sprockets with new ones. You really do need a standard spec worn belt. I'm trying to help you out here so you don't feel that you have to toss them all out.

My son has an '84 928. He kept his water pump through 2 belt changes and ran both belts to the max miles. The pump was still good but he replaced it for the 3rd belt. His theory is that the belt and pump are stresses lightly on the 16v engines. But, this pump did go the distance without a problem. Maybe a new pump is the way to go.

Thats so funny, what the hell was he waiting for. does your neighbor not know your a 928 guru!

I cant think of a better neighbor to have. Hopefully he dosent drive the thing and has already ordered up the parts he needs!
The car is in my shop and has been there since we found the T belt like this. He's getting the parts needed now and I'll get to change it when the parts are on hand. My feeling is that once the teeth start to strip it doesn't take long to get dangerous.

The mini rollers I've seen have been gummed up - basically fixed skids, instead of rollers.

I'm on the fence about whether to ditch the roller with my automatic tensioner. I kinda think it's a bandaid part, to compensate for the shortcomings of the factory tensioner.

BTW: I wonder why they only used the double roller from 87-90?

It's an easier call when one is a DIY type - I'd be tempted to leave it in were the bearing tight: My '80 still has the original pump - which will stay in until it dies ....

His rollers are nice and shiny and roll freely. Normally, the rollers don't touch the belt so do get looking pretty badly. I think if enough pressure was put on them, such as forcing the belt tooth back into the sprocket, even the gummed up roller would turn. I suppose the single roller wasn't found to be adequate so the change was made to go double. Is it true they went back to the single roller for MY>90? I can't remember what Garth's 93 GTS had for rollers.

My son's water pump had 200+k miles on it when he changed it for no reason other than it seemed the right thing to do.

Hey Rog - You can still read the printing on at least one or two of those old pelts..er belts, which means they are probably less than 10K mi. What's the story on those?

One came from my GTS. It was changed when I first bought the car but after 10k I went in again to change the cam gears (long story) and for the sake of $40 changed it again while I was in there.
The other was on my 87 and I changed everything just because I could and I was not 100% when everything had been done.

Steve are you coming on Saturday or to MF - we miss you.

I miss you guys too. Yes, I'm up for gtg Saturday and probably Marble Falls. I've been working on the '87 - steering rack, rack boots, ps hoses, lower ball joints, upper ball joint boots, tie rod ends, front tires, alignment, state inspection, RMB, window and sunroof switches repaired, new horns, new coolant reservoir. Motor mounts still look good. Next up - TB/WP.
