Exclamation 5 bar oil pressure while driving. what could it mean?

Car is new to me and had sat for a while. Six months to a year...?
Oil pressure at idle is 3-4. Jumps to 5 bars with any acceleration. What could cause this?
How much oil should this car be filled with?
What would cause the warning light on the top center of the dash to come on? The red ! light.
Thanks for your help!

This means your car is working as intended.

5th gear on the highway my car is around 4 - at idle around 2. 100% normal.

Sounds normal to me.

The Red light is for the brake system (!) low brake fluid usually.

Porsches work on the theory of high volume AND pressure in the oil system, 5 bars is good to go, thats only about 75PSI or so.

Welcome, Joseph.

If you don't have one yet, get a copy of the Owner's Manual.

If you do have it - give it a read-thru.

any other indicator lights accompanying the "!" light? Leaky fluid on the brake MC might suggest warning for pressure and trigger the brake light switch "!" circuit ....

No other lights just the !.
I have the manual coming. I have the complete workshop manuals but there is no mention of the amount of oil to re-fill.
Thanks again.

Half way point between the two marks is where I keep mine. Usually a bit over 8 quarts.

Hey dude, Im up the hill from you in Victorville.

I would run the dipstick between the 2 marks as previously said.

Also check your brake fluid NOW... I bet its low. Top it up with DOT 4 if you can, DOT 3 will work. DO NOT USE DOT 5.

My 83S shows 5 Bar pretty much anywhere above ~1700rpm.

Does the light stay on while you're driving? They light comes on when you start until you hit the brake lights, it will let you know if a light is out. So it might be that if there's no other lights, although you should get a warning light on the dash with this as well. Could be a light out in the dashboard?

I had the same thing when I first bought my 83S, it would flash every once in a while for a second then stop. I found it to be that the oil pressure sender had a sort of burp or hiccup every once in a while and the thing either got stuck or the pressure just dropped for a second. after a few runs with 10-30 Mobil ! extended performance the light seems to stay off and the gauge stays from mid to full at all times. Full when the car is cold and the oil still thick and then after awhile does what you discribed.

Is your parking brake still slightly pulled on? Also, check for any exterior lights not working (although you would have another additional warning light on if that were the case).

My oil pressure reads MAX 5 almost all the time. But that could be because I am rarely off the MAX throttle!!! .

Can't believe people said this was normal... Oil Sender Unit needs to be replaced. This is giving you a false amount ( Over 5 bars, not normal) and will cause the main alarm light to come on.
