door speaker selection
I have been reading posts for a week but as usual havent found the info ive needed. does anyone have the diamond audio s400 series speakers in their doors for i guess 87 and up? I am buying soon and would appreciate some feedback. also please let me know what speakers you all are running. I am highly opposed to the mb quartz.
Thanks,
James

I am opposed to the mb quartz because they have titanium tweeters as opposed to kevlar or aluminum. the material used is a good tell of what the speaker will sound like. with the door panels so thin and the speakers so thin, they do not produce base so they will be "tinny". I unfortunately experienced this with my subaru sti.

ok here we go, i think you get the jist of the message meaning the titanium tweeters produce a harsher sound. When there is very little base or midrange to go along with it because of the size of the speakers, the tweeters are overpowering and the sound is crappy. anything else i can clarify for you sterling?

I have spent thousands of dollars with all kinds of equipment on the sti with many different shops tuning and full dynamat with sub etc and i have found that the sub rarely fills in enough of the base on a system that has limits, (sound deadening, and backfill and space issues). I really only meant that i wanted soft dome tweeters. I didnt mean to imply that mb quartz is not good. Just not for me. I wish i could hear all of the different setups that people have in their cars but i cant. i havent even gotten 1 response on diff brand speakers that people are using yet.

I have no knowledge of diamond audio...
I have well matured (read old but good) a/d/s/ 335is component sets in the doors and like them very much. The tweeter is behind the stock grill and the mid has its own a/d/s/ grill - which looks a reasonable match to stock. Sound is excellent - certainly not too bright but my crossovers have tweeter level adjustments - so tunable. Agree with Sterling - tastes & desired sounds are different and tuning with active crossovers is time consuming and mostly subjective.
Unfortunately the best way to know you are going to like the sound is to hear someone elses set-up actually in a 928 and replicate... Otherwise itas always a bit of a crap shoot. Active crossovers make tuning possible - so worth looking for amps with extensive Xover features: levels & band-pass options mainly for the doors. Good fill-in from a sub and/or good rear (B Pillar) bass helps round the sound out more.

Diamonds
I have the diamonds 4 in the doors with the tweets and 6.5 at the back seat with the crossovers-one under each back seat. and the amp is in the rear for now..
They sound really good and clear. I've messed with many a systems in various cars and without subs, never like what I heard, until I heard these.
I didn't find a US supplier, but here is the similar setup.

Lots of past topics on speakers when you search the archives.
Here's one that includes pics of the Boston Acoustics setup in my car (they sound real good):

Sterling - sorry I wasn't clear - the passive component set crossovers have the tweeter level controls - no freq shift (since its a matched set) and yes its definitely worth checkling what controls you have (variable or switched levels etc) unfortunately with most componant sets you just get what you get with no alternate options... using other cross-overs may give non optimal frequency points... pro's/con's
The active crossovers on the amps feed the sets all round. It seems like fiddling with the sound would be easy but in my experience its always a PITA. My crossovers are burried in the doors - b-pillars etc and my amps are mounted where you can't get to the X-over controls. You can play with it apart but to hear how it sounds you have to put it all back together....(and again and again...)

Three Wheelin'
My car came with Boston Acoustics components in the door and 2-ways in the back, with a 10" or 12" sub box built into the spare tire well. I had to fiddle with it a bit, and I also have an EQ in the dash, which helps. But I like the sound now.
I also have component MB Quarts in my Speedster replica, and I like them too. Definitely brighter, but I didn't cut the gain to the tweeters on the crossovers--you can step down the tweeters by 2db increments.
