(Car '81 US AT) I was under the car and noticed a missing stud and nut on the passenger side bank, on the cylinder closest to the firewell. I'm assuming there is supposed to be one there. Anyone else have a stud back out and disappear like this?

I’ve seen this locally on an early 928. The rear most stud broke off. My suggestion is, if the exhaust doesn’t leak, then leave it alone. To fix this you’ll have to pull the head off. Even if it leaked a little I would leave it alone. Pulling the head to change a stupid exhaust stud is just insane.

I know this is an old post but I too am missing my passengerside rear exhaust manifold stud. I guess it must be broke off because it appears to have no hole in the head for it. I'm getting a severe exhaust leak in the mornings now that it's gotten cold. Anyone dealt with this while the motor was in the car?

I noticed last week that the rearmost stud on the drivers side is broken. I had just decided that I'd go ahead and do all the seals and gaskets with the engine in the car, but figured this was a sign that I needed to pull it. If the engine is out, there's no reason to take off the head, is there?

since all of you guys are going studless, I would check to see if the rear manifold brace is in position. The brace is connected to both sides of the bell housing using the thick bell housing bolts, and then one of the manifold to header pipe studs.
My guess is that the manifolds are moving enough to work the studs loose. Also see if the central pipe hanger is in place most of these are missing for some reason ( the hanger connects to the rear side of the center heat shield) the idea is to keep the exhaust moving with the driveline

Looks like it might be a PITA but if this exhaust leak gets any worse I'm gonna have to tackle it. Listening to the exhaust leak makes me crazy especially in the AM when everything is cold.
