Default Driving with noisy TT bearings

So, am I correct in assuming it would be foolish to attempt a trip of 1,000 miles if there is a hum coming from the TT bearings or the TCF Bearings? Maybe even a little vibration.

Not saying you should go out and drive a 1000 miles but...I drove my old S4 for a LONG time with bad TT bearings. I had to wait until we got a house before i tackled the DYI job. In my case it was just NOISY..no vibration.

Same here. Drove mine for a few months before getting it fixed.

To date we have never seen a catostrophic bearing failure of either.

There's no danger of damaging the alumimum block?

The noise starts out as a hum, goes to a whine, eventually sounds like a garbage disposal eating lemons had one old car come in that was rattling and banging like crazy but that did not damage anything else BUT always always change the convertor bearings when changing the noisy torque tube....ALWAYS ! and for those years 86-87 or so where the convertor drive plate is RIVETED to the hub drill out the rivets and bolt it as recommended by Porsche. Should be no problem driving a 1,000 miles or so it may make more noise but never seen any damage.

Just say you only get half way...you're certainly going to the right place for a quick TT job!

Thanks guys.
Brian - I'll be there even if I have to drive a civilian car.
Bill - I guess as long as I can get within 100 miles, AAA can take care of the rest.

Damn!! I guess this means I shouldn't do my Bill Ball burn out at Sharktoberfest with my new "Dribble water in front of the rear tires" system.
