Unhappy TBF!!!!!

The "car died on me" issue i had resulted to be a TBF, so my engine is shot.
I took the car over to Greg @ precision motorwerks, and he gave me the bad news. TBF, crankshaft broken(!).
I don't have time, $ 4-5K for a new engine (is there anything salvageable on this one?) or much of a will to go on with the car, so i am thinking of selling it as is to the best offer.
Car is:
1988 S4 with GTS rear end and aluminum flares (GTS style but better )
95 Auto tranny (almost new)
Updated GTS brakes (the big ones), RH CUP 18" wheels...
Car is at Precision Motorwerks, an Anaheim, CA. I am open to offers.
I would part the car out but i just move to an apartment (a nice one BTW) and don't have a place to put the shark corpse.
Any offers, please email me to pablo@dickmunns.com or call my cell (562) 260-1676 after 5pm. You can PM me too.
Thanks
Pablo Acosta

Sorry to hear about this preventable illness. Somebody put that almost new tranny in incorrectly.

Somebody should pop a rebuilt motor into it. The heads, pistons and rods should be salvageable, as well as all the accessories, of course.

Man. That sucks. There was a 5.l shortblock (factory rebuilt) for sale here a week or so ago at a very good price. Less that 2k if I remember correctly. Try a search. It most likely has been purchased at that low price but its worth a shot.

Sorry to hear the bad news. How and where did the crank break?

Please take and post some pic's. You don't have to do this by yourself. I imagine as many top 928'rs in SoCal, that if you can come up with the $$$ for the block, there will probably be plenty of help. First, though, you shold become a member. It sounds like a nice car. I have seen complete engines on ebay for less than 2500.

Best of luck and I am empathize with the bad luck

Unless a lot of metal made it through the filter, the top half of the engine should be okay. If that is the case, you just need a shortblock. Find somebody with a timing belt failure S4, GT or GTS engine (good bottom, bad heads/valves) and make them a deal. If you want a bump in performance (go from 9.3:1 compression to well over 10:1) you could swap in an 85-86 short block, but you'd probably have to get the pistons cut with larger valve reliefs. Plenty of options out there to save your car.

Pablo,

I'm sorry man . Did you have any warning signs at all?

Sorry if it's too soon to talk about, but if you can help anyone else avoid this fate, some good can come of it.

Sorry to hear this nicobel...i`d hate to see you lose a car you love. One possible solution could be to convert to a small block chevy...not that hard to do...plenty out there and cheap...check out renegadehybrids.com...oh,and before the flaming begins,i am one of the very few 928 owners on this board who has a car that is all original.

Who installed the new tranny. The problem probably started there. Any recourse from them?

There are two kinds of TBF......i caught the thrust bearing variety of the disease and was lucky enough to eventually locate a good used engine from a fellow rennlister which has run flawlessly all summer.....the thing is though that even if you find a good replacement at a good price, your still looking at 5 grand by the time its in and running......i suppose the alternative is driving a chevy....yikes....anyway, i have an 87 euro engine in my garage which i might consider parting out....heads, etc.

"all original" Then you've never replaced anything?
