And what really sucks about those numbers below is that for a 1/4 drag strip, the GT will require three shifts...with 3rd to 4th near the finish....

My old 87 with slightly taller rear tires would almost do the 1/4 in one shift..(1st to 2nd).....(of course chips removed the redline..)....if i didn't have to do that extra 2nd to 3rd at the end..would have been a wicked 1/4mile time...

If the above doesn't exactly match the owner's manual it's because I converted Louie's kph values into mph and rounded the answers.

Perhaps if you like your 928's condition, search for a 5sp tranny and do a conversion...huge difference between the Auto's and the 5sp S4's in terms of control of the car...instead of waiting/hoping the AT will do what you want..you just shift to whatever gear you need at the moment.....

just more things to thing about..haha..

I've considered it Tom but was advise by many that the effort to change the auto to manual was tremendous; easier (apparently) to find a good 5 speed, S4 or GT...............not in this part of the world.

5th = 275
A few other speed/rpms in 5th gear is:
100 = 2300
120 = 2800
140 = 3300
160 = 3750

This is info from the owners manual.
The 2.73 GT axle ratio makes for a bit high rpm for comfy cruising.
Thx Louie, great input.

Not many 'mph' countries left................interesting that Britain weighs and measures in metric 'til it comes to road speeds...............must be a Euro thing but I digress

My car is 'prestine' compared to the 'rough' GT thats locally for sale.

Perhaps I should open the discussion to evaluate s/c cars and their respectibe performance; again I'm not interested in 0- 60 mph times but realistic on road 60-130mph performance. Tony? Andrew?..........new thread?

I agree 100%.

If Porsche was so 'innovative' and 'ahead of the times' with the 928 as so many wax poetic about (..erroneously at that), then why didn't they give it a 6th gear? Now THAT would have been innovative; it's ridiculous the RPM the car spins at 75 mph in 5th gear!

I suspect your SO is correct from than one perspective: getting ones jollies from such a crotch rocket too often precludes the occasion to become too old ....

A good S4 auto is a most desirable machine - especially when well sorted out: I had a NA spec twin to my ex '88 Euro here for 5 weeks, and got it to nearly the same state of tune as I enjoyed the experience again.
The only thing I missed from the manual trans was the more precise engine braking on overrun .... but I live in a land of endless twisties: the roads of Alberta that I used to roam are far more open and of a higher speed nature - that should pose no limitation on driving with an auto.

Hence why I now drive vs ride..........ate up all my m/cycles lives and then some and lived to tell the tales.

I had wished I had a little more engine braking the other day..............see my 'M3 thread'; no fun approaching those tight BC twisies at 200kph and finding your normally sufficient brakes lackin'.

It obviously pains me to part with my car for no other reason than a few more HP and slightly better hwy gearing...............another solution is more HP as discussed.

DR...........can I get a winter payment schedule?

Here you go...DOHC, 4valve/cyl, under 500lbs, 6 cyl...but not quite 190HP

Is there anyway you can keep your S4 and get the GT too? There are several methods of rationalization and creative explanation that may keep the household CFO off your back long enough to drive the GT for a while and help make up your mind.
1) I'm buying this for a friend who's wife won't let him have one. He'll pay me back.
2) You are right, honey. I don't need the GT and it would just be a lot of work to fix up. Since my S4 is all done and I don't have to stay home and work on it, I think I'll go to the ti++y bar and get drunk.
3) Those GTs are so hard to find anymore the price keeps going up. I could get this one, fix it up, sell it, and make a few thou. (Could take 5 or more years).

Lots more "reasons". You might find one that works.

They tried when developing GTS and ordered one from Getrag. Result didn't last 500 Nm torque and Porsche ended up modifying GT box.

I often wondered why Porsche didn't adopt an overdrive. When I was reading my Car and Driver and it gave specs I noticed something I thought was interesting the Corvette with a six speed ratio of 0.57 and rear 3.45 was limited by drag not computer limited like the rest of the vehicles in the test. I know that there have been 20 years of improvements but drag could have been an issue along with space for the overdrive gear and Lock up converters weren't that good in the 80's from what I remember.
