A neglected 928 can be wAy down on oomph. 75 horsepower or more. Easy.

Where the Hell is Alberta.... maps.google.com.... OK....

You need to take a road trip to the Washington/Oregon area; plenty of well-running GTs in the Northwest.

Your question is a $10k question. (The approximate cost to re-baseline all scheduled maintenance and near-end-of-life parts.) Invest in a road-trip. I'd be surprised if the PacWest folks didn't welcome you.

In your case, you have a double whammy: You have the long rear end, and the 2nd gear start. Maybe you need to work on the 2nd gear start (some people said you can change that with an adjustment), add the dynamic kick-down from the 94 GTS or a Jager transmission shift relay kit. And then you already increased power with the X-Pipe - unless you go supercharger I don't think you have any less power than a GT...

Lastly, my first 928 was an 88 S4 in black with light grey interior. A beautiful car, with a few flaws. So I thought I'd get a perfect one. Well, by the time I had it, I had spent twice the money with the car beeing nicer, but not twice as nice. In the meantime that nicer car has many more miles on it, and got more of the unavoidable rock chips and other wear. So what I'm trying to say is that you really don't gain all that much by upgrading. You'd still have a 928, but spend a lot more money...
Thanks nicole for your input............my rear end is indeed long and it does start off in 2nd but once going she rocks.

That being said as the norm for a '88 S4 the GT gearing is what I seek...........I think..............I hate being out of the power band when I want it; I'm a ex motorcycle racer, the power has to be there, now.

The issue is if I want the gearing I need to sell my car to buy the other; its hard enough to justify one sports car in this part of the world, let alone two.

Malcolm...i felt the same way..waiting for the AT to kick down..and the 2.2 running out of top end at the track..even with all my mods and putting 300 ft/lbs to the ground...it just didn't have the top end..

Got my GT..and didn't feel that great..then found out why...flappy was no workie..once that was fixed..well....top end was just screaming....hit the rev limiter in every gear.....unless you drive one day to day...no way can you know....just one drive won't do it....I say give the GT a chance..much better candidate to work on......and upgrade etc...a step above the S4....

Malcolm,

Not that I'm biased but I'd go for the GT. Like Tom and Dave mentioned, there could be a number of relatively easy (?) things to repair to get the GT running right... then again there could be something really wrong with the car, although I doubt it, unless someone has really trashed the motor.

Definitely get a PPI by a good 928 mechanic... and if nothing major is wrong... and can be reasonably repaired... then you would have the power and gearing you seek

Rick.......after all this time and effort I consider myself good enough at the evaluation of a 928 I may wish to buy; especially considering where else I would take it.

It is as suggested a money diff............and my labour; again.

Malcolm, that's great then, you're all set. I guess it gets down to how you like to drive your 928. IMO, there is nothing like driving a 5-speed. I've driven autos from S4's to GTS's and my GT felt much stronger throughout. I've had S4 autos following me on fun runs etc., and they comment on how the GT pulls away.

If you can't find any major problems with the GT, I'd be tempted to go for it. I understand you've put a lot of money and yourself into your S4, but if you plan on keeping a 928 for a while, I'd seriously consider the GT.

One other thing you could consider is S/C on your S4... I haven't driven/ridden in one yet... I've heard once you do, it's very addicting... I'm trying to stay away as my new motor is almost back in the car...

Why not change the transmission to match your needs? I'm sure you could locate what you need in Europe: 1st gear start and shorter rear end were standard there AFAIK. I would expect this to bolt right in - no?

Oh yes,..............keep the same car and add a $6k S/C.............again i haven't driven one.

thats adds to the dilemma.

Yes Malcolm... but what a nice dilema to have...
Keep a beautiful S4, bring back a great GT, S/C your current car...

Decisions, decisions... probably can't go wrong with any of them!

Crunch the numbers, to bring it up to your current S4's specs:
"Mods: Motorsport X Exhaust System, GT RMuffler, Nology Ign Wires, GT Eproms, Turbo twist Rims, Michelin PS2s, Momo steering wheel & Gear shift lever, GTS Aero mirrors, Eibach springs, Bilstein Shocks -"

Exhaust and wires- $1050
Turbo Twists and PS2- $2500( I just bought a set of PS2s)
Interior- $450
Mirrors-$500
Springs and shocks-$1000 ( got a set also, after your post! Thanks by the way)

Timing belt/WP $1000(preventive maintainence)
so far $6500 +/-....=

Supercharger-priceless! (You now can appreciate the rear end ratio} And DR takes mastercard!

If your S4 is an automatic, then it is a no-brainer: get the GT.
