Default Shift points under kickdown

So tonight I went out for a cane, and went to overtake a motorbike. I used kickdown and held WOT, the transmission went into second. The revs just continued to climb and when I glanced at the tach it was in the middle of the red and still no shift, so I had to ease off the go pedal some to induce a shift. Is this normal behaviour? or is my tach over reading and I just had to wait some more for a shift?

Hi

My S2 KICKDOWN as follows....first gear goes to 5900 (44 mph) revs under WOT then changes to second...second goes to 5900 (77 mph).....third goes to 5900 (117 mph)....fourth gear......mine goes to around 190 lol but thats with Nitrous...you can expect around 160 ish...probably 165 mph...

All the best Brett

Mine will shift, under kickdown, in the red zone without needing to ease up on the throttle, so perhaps this is normal. In any case, I think we have rev limiters, too, no?

But I'm more curious...what is "going out for a cane"?

yes we have rev limiters, try putting it in 2nd and hold WOT not shifting to 3rd, you'll hit the limiter.

Ben....whats the condition of the tranny fluid and its level?

'going out for a cane' is probably a typo; perhaps is cone as in ice cream cone

I had to overtake the bike to get home before my ice cream melted

Transmission fluid was changed less than 10k ago, when a 'rebuilt' transmission was installed. Level is perfect. I do have some hard shifts once the tranny is warmed up under light throttle opening. I think I need to back off the modulator a tad.
Are the shiftpoints under kickdown controlled by the bowden cable? If so, I had a tinker with that when doing the intake R&R because the shifts under part throttle were way too early. Its just snug now, ie. no slack in the cable.

Brett, I dont think my S2 is geared as long as yours, i'm already doing 3800-4000rpm at 100mph.

Good to know the priorities of going out for a cone haven't changed.

There is another method of adjusting the shft points; never done it myself but do a search on the List, you should be able to find it.

Hi Ben

I think all S2S in the UK have the same box and diff.....

The rev limiter kicks in at 6375 revs by the way and you WILL know when its kicked in lol...your car will missfire like a pig as it cuts the fuel to the injectors...

To test your shift.....drive off in second....clear road ...then floor it HARD ...and keep the pedal hard down....and watch the rev counter...it should change at 5900.....in EVERY gear....

For the Americans reading this lol...going for a cane = thrashing the ***** off your car for fun

All the best Brett

Brett, I think my car must have a different differential to other S2's, its definately geared short compared to what the specifications say.
I did a little reading up, and the bowden cable doesnt effect the shifts when using kickdown, the kickdown relay interrupts the power to the kickdown solenoid on the transmission just before maximum engine speed, which induces a shift up. If max engine speed is 6375, then thats pretty much at the end of the red zone!

Hi Ben

YES...Thats what I said lol...

Change up under WOT = 5900

Rev limiter kicks in HARD = 6375

You need to go out on road with assistant...and WRITE DOWN revs at change UP under WOT.....AND speeds of gear changes...

Answers SHOULD BE.....5900 on ALL changes....

44 mph, 77 mph, 117 mph ,160 ish....

Well just to let you who are interested know.. I took my car for another cane tonight and I can tell you that it shifts at the end of the red zone under WOT.
On a side note.... Some of you may recall I was having problems with my rear brakes recently. I had my MOT the other day (safety inspection) and my braking force was 95% front to 5% rear! I had suspected both rear flexi lines were collapsed as I had changed out the brake regulator valve (which helped a bit).
This evening I installed some goodridge lines, and the brakes seem much better. I'll take it to the shop and get it on the brake tester again.

your govenor contols the top end shift point... it's adjustable via the 2 white plastic screws on either side of the unit when it's removed from the side of the trans. 2 turns is about 250rpms, iirc but I can't remember if in is up or out, but it's marked on the govenor body.

mine was shifting early, made the adjust and now it rocks/shifts just at redline flawlessly.

iirc, our peak power is just under redline w/a "normal" cam/head profile, so shifting over about 6200rpms is just wear and tear/making noise/tempting valve springs & fate...

time to get pissed, mates!!

Including first?..................what did you do to make the red line change?

I couldn't tell you about first gear, I was too busy looking at the big cloud of smoke coming from my rear
After I bled the air from my brakes I forgot to reinstall the reservoir cap! and some of the fluid splashed onto the exhaust manifold as I was testing.
Next time i'm under the car i'll have a look for the govener and give it a tweak. As you say, there is absolutely no point in having it shift that high.
Where is the redline on an S4? The 'rebuilt' gearbox in my car may have come from one.
