Default 928 track car????

I have a 997 Carrera S that currently does street/track duty and I've progressed to the point where I'm looking for a deidicated track car and a 928 has its appeal for a lot of reasons.

1. Lots of power and can supercharge
2. Can go on a significant diet
3. Neutral handling
4. Cars are relatively inexpensive.
5. I've always liked 928s
6. It is something different.

I do have a few concerns though
1. Headroom - I'm 6'4" without the helmet and long in the torso. I'd replace the standard seats with racing buckets. Is there enough room? Non-Sunroof car any better?
2. Any problems with supercharging? I don't want a maintenance or repair headache
3. I want the car to be as fast as my 997 on the track.
4. Availability of suspension mods?

I've done searches and read a pile of stuff but some of the threads are dated.

Advice please!

Thanks. Chris.

1/ Non sunroof cars have an extra 2" headroom, so yes in your case it it would be important . I cant comment on how much you gain with racing buckets.
If you found the 'right' car & it had a sunroof you can turn it into a 'non' car
fitting non sunroof roof

2/ No personal S/C experience, but I cant remember reading of anybody having a bad S/C experience, all seem to be VERY positive

3/ It will be faster

4/ How much do you want to spend ? stock to race is all available

Have you have seen the race result threads ? Mark Anderson & Mark Kibort , you will choose very wisely if you decide to get a 928.

I think you'll be fine for headroom as long as you have the racing buckets in. While there are no problems supercharging you will not need a supercharged 928 to beat a street 993,6 or 7 on the track. A gutted 928 and superb driving skills will be more than enough. Lastly there are plenty of suspension modifications and it doesn't need anything too fancy. Mostly your choice will come down to what kind of ease of adjustment would you like. The link below has plenty of video proof.

You already live in Canada, so does this raccar thats for sale.....pretty good price for such a nice race 928 too! I also think you will need track seats and a non-sunroof 928...I'm 6-1 and with my sunroof S4 and stock seats, even in the lowest position I still hit my head pretty bad on the roof...I have to slide down in the seat to clear it....which isn't the most comfortable driving position either

That is a great deal - I can't believe someone hasn't snapped it up yet. Advertise more!

Crazy Canuck, this would be one hell of a jumping-in-with-both-feet into tracking a 928.

FWIW - Jean-Louis Euro 16V with 260ish rear wheel HP didn't have issues running with GT3's at Road America. He wasn't faster, could hang with them during a race.

Once he bolted on a supercharger - holy hell was that fun to watch.

His car is (was) 100% drivetrain stock - stripped down to about 2,600lbs.

As for headroom - I'm 6'1", very tall in the torso (I have short legs, or so I'm told) I had a few issues in my 81 wearing a helmet with stock seats (sunroof car). In my 79 runroof delete car & Recaro Pole Position racing shells, I have plenty of room.

The car DK is selling looks like a killer deal. If I had found that car before I purchased my 79 - I probaby would have jumped on it. Give Carl @ 928Motorsports a call - add an easy 100hp.

Here is a video of my 79 track car at Road America. Somewhat stripped - stock drivetrain (+ headers, 225rwhp), S4 brakes & suspension:

I own several 928's and cars without sunroofs are rare in the states most are the early cars pre 81 both of mine are 79 euros.

an early 16v car is good for racing no computer and if the timming belt breaks it dosent destroy the valves be careful to check that the alluminum ball joint carier has been replaced its a serious issue on the early cars.

Chris,

DK's car is the perfect car to start tracking the 928. All the "hard work" part is done and he has parts for the next step.
Are you planning on racing or just DE? I ask since a SC car would put you into a PCA class that the 928 would have a hard time winning. Most of us crazy 928 racers stick to GT2 and eventually build a larger NA motor. There is a SC 6.0L car owned by Tom F., but don't think he has "raced" it yet. Does kick a%% in DE.
The stripped out 928 is going to feel and sound much different than the nice 997 with all it's interior in place. Huge difference between my 928 street and track car.

Are you driving to the track or will you trailer it there? (Does the car need to be street legal)

1. Non-sunroof w/ racing shells is a guaranteed fit. Sunroof w/ shells like Recaro SPG is going to be close.

2. No one has long term (years) experience racing a supercharged 928. Not that it couldn't be done, but it hasn't been done yet.

3. 997S is 355 hp at 3100 lb? Get a 928S4, throw headers/exhaust on it and gut it from 3500 to 3100 lb and it should turn about the same lap times.

4. Not plentiful like a 997. No off-the-shelf spring/damper combos like PSS9, JRZ, Moton Clubsport, etc. For a full track suspension, it's going to be a custom designed application from Devek or 928 Motorsports. Leda has a kit I think.
