Default overheated engine, what might be damaged?

Hi

I'm looking at a 1979 928 4,5L wich is for sale. The engine is overheated and damaged but a complete replacement engine follows with the car, so thats ok.

But I'm wondering what it might take to rebuild the damaged engine? Is it likely to get it fixed by rebuilding the top, or is it usal that the block/internals also go bad when overheated?

Start with a blown headgasket & cracked heads...& work down from there!

The list of damaged components could be quite long depending on how hot it got and for how long. Anything from a bad head gasket to piston, cylinder, and bearing damage. When an engine get really really hot, the pistons cannot transfer heat to the cylinder walls fast enough and begin to melt. This is why some engine that have very short pistons with material removed from their skirts so they can run at extreme rpms, have to have oil sprayed on their untersides to cool them.

I bought an insurance total years ago that I thought was just a strip and vandalized. Later found out that the sump was holed and it overheated. It needed a head gasket, replaced both, the heads shaved 5 thou and a number of the head studs replaced that had fatigued. Bottom end was fine. This was probably more extreme than what you are looking to buy.

Heads warped and gaskets, ovalised bores and pistons, damaged rods, bearings and crank...........hopefully the block didn't crack otherwise its useless.

I overheated a 944 last year and I mean overheated and the only thing that happened was a warped head. I am sure that thier might be some metal damage somewhere but no trace in the oil or filter.

Mine overheated (seized water pump) and when all was said and done, only damage was blown head gaskets.

Ceedee, tell Taffelman and Brian you're sorry. The rest of us have already forgiven you for being a jerk to Taffelman.
