928 fuel economy at Autobahn Speeds
A German GTS owner provided the following numbers of fuel consumption he measured on the German Autobahn:
km/h -- Liters/100km
140 -- 13 (about 18 miles per Gallon at 88 mph)
160 -- 14
180 -- 16
200 -- 19
220 -- 22
240 -- 28
250 -- 32
260 -- 36
270 -- 41 (about 5.7 miles per Gallon at 169 mph)
You can see that the consumption increases exponentially with speed. This is largely caused by aerodynamic drag, which increases to four times as much as you double your speed.
And obviously, you don't get very far with one tank of gas - he gets little over 200 km, or 125 miles on the Bahn. Now consider this at $6 per Gallon of gas in Germany... Ouch!
He also needs to add one quart of oil at every fill-up after driving on the Autobahn.
Anyway, I just thought this was an interesting bit of information.

I think George gets about 5-6 mph during ORR....& looses about the same amount of oil.......
Boy only 125 miles on a full tank......but I gotta admit it would quite fun having to stop for gas every 45 minutes!!!!
I heard the new Bugatti Veyron (1001hp quad turbo W16) gets about 3mpg at top speed (253mph!!!)

Well, I haven't logged the speeds and fuel consuption on my trips to Chicago, but I'm happy to average 21mph on the 600 mile round trip. That's cruising at closer to 90mph, with the occassional run up into triple digits. No oil consumption issues, either.
I think that's pretty decent for this type of car.

14mpg with my 81 - all that wheel spin cannot be good for mileage.

I have seen the milage for the Le Mans 928 quoted several places as 8mpg.
This is obviously the best speed to travel at since you can go back to when gas was cheap.

Interesting.... On the last trip to Sharktoberfest, 400 miles of mostly flat highway, I managed 18.5MPG. Average speed, including stops, 87mph. I'd have expected the GTS to get better mileage at a steady 88mph.

Then there's the tire wear.
I don't remember the exact numbers., but there was someone in Germany who did frequent trips on the Autobahn at 125+ mph and went through a set of tires in ~5000 miles. Sounds reasonable until you figure out that's about 40 HOURS per set of tires.

Based on few tests we have done in Germany those numbers look very similar on other models also. Due to gearing it seems 180 to 200 kph is limit above which consumption starts to get so high it will mean one more fuel stop in long autobahn drive. This will kill average speed and actual gain is minimal unless average speed is raised significantly above 200.

For example, it is about 500Km from where I live to the Nurburgring & I get quite close to the Ring before I have to fill up.
I also use plenty of oil at those speeds.

This where the 2.20 comes in handy? I've had similar economy.
