I have the same issue... I have to shift very carefully until I've driven 1/4 mile or so. If I'm in a hurry first thing, I'll make my first shift out of 1st a 1-3 shift. That gets me to the stoplight up the street and after that it's fine going sequentially through the gears. No issues when hot. Not sure this could really be considered a problem.... though I understand your concerns after just dropping that much $$$ into the trans.

Dave...you hit the nail on the head

1-3 to avoid 2nd crunching after a rebuild sounds fishy. I'll let you know what the shop indicates.

I've done the 1-3 or 2-4 upshifts for forever, but I just read a tech bulliten from Acura regarding my NSX that says that technique is equally hard on synchros, even with rev matching. Articles makes sense from an engineering point. Any trans expert (uh-hum Steve) care to comment?

Steve,

But all automatics restrict the driver's decision, imho. The zero to XXX is fun but, 35-XXX in hard corners is fantasitc. MT's are for control freaks, and AT's are for the out of control freaks ... noting that everyone with a 928 have earned the right to be a freak

It's not about whether it's easier on syncros or not; I do the 1-3 shift because the synchro going into 3 is in better shape, works fine when cold.

My mornings usually go something like this:

After backing out of driveway, putt 150 ft to corner in 1st.
Do the 1-3 shift on my way to the stop sign 2 blocks up.
Do it again on my way to the stoplight ~5 blocks up.
Make a left on the way to work, and just shift normally from then on.

Small price to pay IMHO... It's on the list though.

I tried a new routine this morning

Right out of the driveway just after the car started rolling (1000-1500 rpm) shift to 2nd (Slowly). Carry on out of residential in 2nd and eventually hit the highway portion of the commute. Once in town things are fine.

This may just have to be my MO from now on.

downshifts when cold or hot would be the main issue with "worn" synchros. if you cant shift up, you have BAD synchros.

I think 2nd gets chewed up first from knucklehead drivers over the years mis-shifting, letting the clutch out early because they fumbled the gate, etc.

I consider my 2nd gear synchro "marginal" rather than "bad" since it's fine once I have driven a few blocks.

Well, if you just paid to have it rebuilt, I think you should be back there asking questions. Did you ask about the shift dog sliders that Garrity mentioned?
