So I just got back from Brian's house. We pugged his brain into my car and the injectors started going crazy! But it ran... ran like crap, but it ran. Hmmm.... so we plugged it back into his car. Nothing... Hmmmm?
I poked my head around the fuel tank to listed for the fuel pump. Sounded awfully quiet. So we pulled the FP relay and jumpered it. It ran. I asked him if he had jumpered the relays like I had instructed him, and all he had done was swap them with the horn relay.
So after we had it jumpered I had him try to start it again. It caught, but would not run for more than 5 second, but it was just barely running. We tried a few times, but I think because we had the FOP relay jumpered and the injectors were firing like a machine gun we probably flooded the engine a bit.
So we had a multiple failure: FP relay and I suspect the LH brain as well. What a crappy way to be introduced into 928 ownership. Poor guy.
SO he has Rich and John's info for getting a rebuilt LH. Hopefully the car will fire right up after that. THanks to everyone's input.
Oh... BTW, I took a video of the LH's operation in my car. I'll post it in a few minutes after I get it uploaded.
Update: Here's the video! Failed LH

Andrew: Erratic behavior happens when these fail. Mine would sort of start and idle very poorly, then on next attempt the injectors would freak. Finally it failed to start. It's nice when you have a breakdown 30 minutes from DEVEK - Marc drove me over a loaner brain, and I wasn't even late for work.

I just played the video. The clicking noise is typical of LH failure, but it is strange that it started without having to jump the FP relay. Usually in this failure mode the FP is not energised by the LH.
I assume you had already started the car with your LH, so the fuel lines had fuel at pressure in them. I guess it would run for a some seconds, and then cut out ? And then not restart.....

Good job Andrew. I spoke with Brian on the phone a couple times and gave him a few things to check, but the video tells the story. I received a PM from him this morning and he said the PO will be giving him some money back for his troubles. The 928 community is awesome.

Ahhh... interesting. So his FP relay might have been okay afterall. You are correct in your assumption that I still had FP in the rails when we started mine. You guys are awesome.
As much as I was just trying to a fellow 928er, I also look at these situations as a way to learn someting albeit at someone else's expense. This was the first LH failure I have ever seen fist hand.
