I began again but the worst part is that when I immediately shut it back down, a distinctive scraping noise was evident, as if a water pump was grinding its way into the block. Horrible metallic scraping noise. Ugly! Fugly even. I will probably have nightmares tonight thinking about a ruined block from a NEW water pump. *&$%#&$%@!**!!! Oh well, I just love driving my energizer Rabbit, and it appears I shall be driving it quite awhile longer. Someday, I want to get one of those neat Porsche 928s to drive.....

Hey Bill, it's definitely WP noise? Just recalling the bolt head kissing the harmonic balancer on mine due to the washer on the wrong side of the tensioner pulley... although it was easier for us to find with the orange dust from the balancer, the focus of noise initially lead us to suspect the WP as well.
Just a thought.

Regarding the overheating problem, assuming the WP is in fact turning, you may have a big air pocket in the cooling system, in your case in the upper hose above the thermostat. Just a suggestion, and Bill may well already know of this technique, try pulling the upper hose off at the radiator, hold it up and fill it with coolant. You may be surprised at how much you are able to put in by this method. I always do this when refilling the cooling system on a 928 and have never had any problems relating to air pockets in the cooling system. Be sure to pull the small hose at the top of the radiator too (driver's side) as this helps bleed air out of the top of the radiator.
Hopefully you just have a cavitating WP & I hope the metallic scraping is just a minor annoyance & easy fix.
Good luck guys!

I don't think it is the scraping roller that happened with your car, Kirt. We did have a washer fall off during teardown, just like in your case, but we were careful not to put it on the incorrect pulley shaft. We'll know when we pull the center cover.
I've never had any problems getting a pump to pump just by dumping coolant into the overflow bottle and letting it flow in by gravity. We had 2 gallons of water in the block and Ron added another 2 gallons of coolant. That should do it. I did manually burp the hoses a bit.

Back by popular demand: a re-run of the fun!!
Well, if the first episode was entertaining, this repeat of an always popular exercise is certain to have you sitting on the edge of your seats. This TB/WP party will resume again on Saturday, October 7, at 10 AM. Bring your cameras and soft drinks will be served along with vegetarian pizza for hungry participants and fans. How often can you see not only one such affair but a re-match in such a short time?
As most will recall, the machine prevailed in the last round of the last event. Well, the combatants are at it again, and won't take this sitting down. They are rested and ready to jump in and slay this evil gremlin once and for all.
Hey, as one renowned P car machinist aptly expressed it when confronted with a similar disaster, "a man built this machine, and a man will figure out how to make it work, since it is certainly no better than a man." (I hope he's right)
Anyway, come and cheer for the men who shall restore this cantankerous machine to its former glory in the space of one day.

Yes, the home projects will never end. New house, new projects. But still projects.
Cars are the same way. Hose projects are more financially rewarding in the long-term.

Round Two with Ron's car should be interesting. What looks like an immediate failure of a rebuilt water pump is not something I have seen before. If it's not a failed water pump, but some other issue causing overheating and noise, then it is still something I have not seen before!
Nicole: Remind me that we want to check your TB then too.

Shouldn't Nicole come over early enough to let her engine cool before it is checked? She also knows where to find great veggie pizzas, if she can be enticed to come over before lunch (hint, hint).
