Went into the garage today and found a shelf had collapsed and dropped it's contents down the drivers side of my shark..
Now I have a huge dent and scar right in front of the drivers side rear window, 6 inches long and some huge dents and scratches down the door. Word could not describe what I was thinking.. Least the window didn't break.
Not a happy camper right now.

Oh no! I totally feel for you! It's one of my fears that something might fall on the beast some time, so I can totally relate. Hopefully you can get this fixed without replacing body panels. Either way, document it before having it fixed, so you are not accused of hiding a serious accident when you sell the beast.

It is one thing to suffer at the hands of another and take some comfort in blaming him/her. But when I do it to myself, it REALLY hurts. I have dropped screwdrivers and tools on the paint, and other dumbkopf things. Hurts to have to live with them. The worst time was a few minutes after my first Porsche was delivered to me. I was in undergraduate school in Arizona and didn't really have much money. I had wanted a P car for so long, I was euphoric when I drove it away from the dealer. I had to "relieve myself" I was so happy, and stopped in a service station to use the lua (bathroom in Hawaiian). When I returned to the car I jumped in and backed right into a pole.
Big dent in my 356Super coupe's rear "bumper". That dent stayed there for at least another school year. I was too naive to blame it on a hit and run, and I lacked the funds to spend on a bumper. I know, why did I have a P car without a cash reserve? Long story, don't ask

This happened to me a few years ago. I hope you can take it as an opportunity to upgrade your paint. I can't abide having anything near my cars now, and have completely reorganized my garage.
I shudder when I see posted pictures of 928s in garages surrounded by shovels rakes etc. I hope that some of you reading this post take the hint and can avoid the same fate.
My convertible is ''as good as new'', but it will never have original paint again. It took me three years to replace the factory stripe kit. LOL with your car.

The only "saving grace" to this is that I am desperate to get the car repainted, the old guards red without the clear coat has gone way past it's sell by date so I am not mourning the paint damage it's just the denting that is pissing me off. I'll post a picture soon.

Don't feel bad my friend. The exact same thing happened to me a few years ago except it was to a 7year build Show Car that I recently finished - might I add, I came home from vacation to discover this - a very low day for me - VERY LOW! Custom $8K pain job too! A top shelf in my garage came loose it had a heavy intake manifold and some other car parts on it and it fell taking the lower shelves with it and SMASH on the driver's side fender and door, ripping off the door mirros in the process. It was my fault as I had overloaded the shelf, it took 2+ years before it finally gave though!
Took $5K to repaint the entire car as the paint was custom.
$hit happens and yes it sucks. Good luck to you!

Nick,
now is a good time to exercise your insurance coverage.
Put the claim in and get it painted.
last spring my passenger flag mirror was broken at a local car wash.
Contacted NJM and they paid enough for me to upgrade to GTS aero mirros.
God Luck

Those that live in eartyhquake country (that includes you, Dave...) need to consider this kind of stuff on an ongoing basis. Cabinets replace shelves, cabinets with latches. Cabinets are secured to the walls. Drawers are nicer than shelves, as they have a kind of limited travel that stops somewhere short of the car.
Nick, I feel for your loss. It took me a couple hours of home paintless dent repair to fix a mark from a falling garden tool. It inspired me to come up with a better system. Perhaps your story will inspire others and help them avoid similar damage.

I have a couple Lotus cars in storage, in crates. I had them winched up to the ceiling, where they should have been completely out of harms' way. But nooooo! Roofers working on the building decided to stand on the crates, and broke through one of them. Two years of negotiating with the contractor and the building owner finally netted a decent settlement. Moral-- There really is no foolproof way to keep the cars safe from everything.

You're right, Bob... Though I did think about this when loading the shelf -- it has maybe 100 lbs of stuff on the bottom shelf, maybe 30 lbs of stuff distributed over the other shelves. I'm going to tie it to the wall tonight.

It can be covered under either. Car would be a lower deductible then the home, probably.
