Default Dash Printed Circuit Fried!

Dang it! I was adjusting the pod height when all of a sudden smoke started coming out from behind it. Shut off the car and pulled to dash apart this afternoon to see the damage. The printed dash cluster’s printed circuit backing is fried. It looks as if part of the lighting circuit shorted against something and took out half the traces & the adjustable dimmer switch. Looks like I need to replace the printed circuit.

Here's a pic;

Found one on 928 Internationals web site but won’t know if they have it until Monday when I call them.

Just in case – does anybody know where else I might find one if they are out of stock?

Thanks,
Bret

Bret,
If you can solder, you may be able to splice in a jumper wire to bypass the fried portion(s). It looks like the damage is pretty localized. I did this on mine where I found my speedometer circuit was open. Good luck.

You can get a new replacement from one of the 928 suppliers for around $60 last time I checked.

Actually I can solder pretty good – but in my professional opinion the printed circuit it’d be a waste of time. Because it is so brittle that it cracks every time I try to move it and should be replaced.

BTW 928 International is selling them for about $100. I also checked ebay and found nothing. Anyone else sell replacements?

I have a new one for a 78 that I bought from 928 Intl but didn't need (yet). If they are out, let me know.

If I were you I would find the wire that shorted and make sure it can't do it again. If you're not sure, solder in a temporary fix and put a 2-5A fuse inline and keep looking till you find the problem. A $100 PCB is pretty cheap really. But if you put it all together and frap it out right away, then it's expensive. You're lucky it's available for your car at all....

Consider yourself fortunate that you have a pre-89 car. PC boards for 89 and later are virtually NLA items. A secondhand board is the only option and there are something like 40 variations.

That would suck to have one of these year models with a intermittent problem with B+ to ground some where there.

Funny you should mention, I just bought a new flex-circuit for the dash on my '79 last week. I got it from 928 International for $95.00 Yankee. They had it to me in a couple of days. This one worked perfectly, there have been bad batches in the past.

If I got the last one, PM me and I can send you my old one. It has cuts and jumpers for the speedometer, but was otherwise Ok. I replaced it while I was in there fixing the voltmeter and gas tank indicator.

Hey Dennis,

Well it looks like 928 International is out of those printed circuit overlays for a 78 cluster. How would you want for the one you have?

Actually Porsche has discontinued that part for 1978 it is no longer being made no longer available as is the 1981-1984 NLA , the 79-80 is still in stock (I bought one for my 1980 just in case) The 1985-1988 is still available ......... FOR NOW ! then when Porsche decides it will be NLA and that is that.
