I'm certainly considering the Sliverknit, but I want to do as much research as possible before I buy it.

I decided to go this route. The carpet arrived today and I plan to install next weekend as my spare time is going to be very limited this weekend. Should there be a rubber backing on any of the carpet pieces? I think there is probably enough information here on Rennlist for me to install the carpet without any problems, but if anybody has any tips that haven't been posted before I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I have coco mats in my wifes BMW and in my 993, and my Roadster...very cool looking and pretty good color options...and they really hide the dirt and last forever, but if your carpet is in bad shape coco mats aren't going to hide the sides, doors, rear tunnel, etc.... I suggest going with darker colors, the lighter colors show dirt too easily. IMHO

Yea, I ended up buying the black carpet from Kraabel and it just got here today. I'm looking forward to installing it as my current carpet is horrible and is actually falling off in certain spots. I never bothered to fix it because I knew this carpet would be showing up. I thought that the floor pieces were supposed to have some sort of rubber backing?

My interior right now is brown, but I plan to eventually convert it to black. I think the black carpet will look good with the brown leather until I get a chance to complete the conversion.

I don't know how the floor pans on your cars have looked but mine are in not so good shape.. IMO at least. I know it is from time mroe than anything but I was thinking that when I was in there adding new seats I would put down a coat of Herculiner on the floor pans to seal them up good and give a nice look even without carpet put in it. I have used the stuff before and it does really well on this kind of application, plus it gives a good surface for laying new carpet on top of so it stay in place. Anyone else done this before?

Be careful what you use inside the car. Some things, not sure about herculiner, make your car smell like road kill for a couple of years..

Oh yeah... I know what your talking about.. I've had good luck with it in the interior of the Scout.. had to leave the doors etc open for a while to let the fumes out while it cured but once it was set.. no smell.. kind of like Fiberglass in that way I guess. Just didn't know if anyone had used it specificly or something like it to seal the inside of the vehicle and give it a good surface for the carpet to adhere to.

I may be mistaken, but are the S4 carpets 'fitted' or moulded items? In my 83 there are flat pieces that locate on press studs on the floor, then some poorly fitted pieces on the lower side of the transmission tunnel, and the removable composite panel covered in carpet like material above that, closing the access to the underside of the console. I conside it all pretty poorly done - there is no underfelt on the floor, the floor carpet tends to move around underfoot, and you can see the floor at the sides. If I am going to replace carpets, I was thinking of getting a large enough piece to cut to fit the sides of the tunnel, the floor and the sill sides so that it has no room to move, completely seals off the floor etc. The current carpets are black, so doing it this way you would not be able to see where its been cut and tucked (if I am careful).
Or will S4 carpets fit older cars?

I was under the impression that the carpets for all years were the same, and if not, very similar. They are fitted, not moulded. I'm still curious, though, shouldn't the floor pieces have some sort of rubber backing like my current carpet does? The new carpet I got has no rubber backing, do I need to buy some?

When I did the carpet it came without foam backing. Taking the old stuff out my impression was that the floor pads were separate pieces. I went to an upholstery shop and bought a few yards of 1/4" (or 3/8"?) thick closed-cell foam. Then I cut it to shape with multiple layers built up using the 3M spray adhesive. This let me adapt it to the bumps and contours of the floor better.

If the carpet had the foam on it then it'd be too thick for the door panels, tunnel and console sides. That might be a more luxurious look, though.

I'll look into that. I'm assuming it turned out well? I'm surprised there aren't more threads about the backing, although are a few.

I think the 'backing' you're talking about is on the floor pans only - for sound deadening. FYI, there is a set for sale on eBay right now. Come to think of it, I have a spare set. Anyway, the stock carpet in my '79 has a tough, black tar-like backing, while the '88 and '90 both have backing more like what's used in homes - made from recycled cloth fibers, I think.

Yea, the backing is only on the floor pieces. It is going to be a heck of job installing the carpet. Does anybody know of a diagram or anything that shows where all of the pieces go? I tried looking, but the thread was too old and the link was outdated.
