a big "C" clamp is what is used. it even has a machined pad on the back of the calipers to rest on.
on the S4, there is a little steel insert that is for a flathead screwdriver to fit in and pry the pads back on both sides of the 4 piston calipers. pretty ingenious

Has anyone found a tool similar the the one shown in the WSM? It is simple and just by looking at it I know it would work great.

This:
Is selling for aprox. $19(139 NOK) in the norwegian/swedish/danish/finnish store "Biltema" that Vilhuer mentions. Don't know what shipping from here to US would be, though.

you dont need it AT ALL on the S4 and later calipers. just a flat head screwdriver will do the trick. there are little points on the calipers that allow you to push the pads back, and then, use the rotor to lever back the pads all the way into the calipers on both sides.

Mark, I know I don't NEED it. I just want it. I'm in the middle of swapping springs (again), and with the anti-vibration discs (I know, another brake component I don't need) stuck to the pads, it's a PITA to pull the pads out of the rear calipers. I know I can get a big channellock or a bigass screwdriver and push them back. I'd just rather have the right tool for the job and not scratch up the calipers I just refinished.
