Default Brake Pad Spreader

I've been using jury-rigged clamps, Channel Lock pliers, pry bars and other non-elegant means to force the pistons back into their bores when changing the pads. I would like to buy a proper tool to do this but all that I have found either work only for single piston callipers or look like some cheap imitation of a proper tool.

Has anyone found a tool similar the the one shown in the WSM? It is simple and just by looking at it I know it would work great.

I use a screwdriver to push the pads back well clear of the rotor. If I need to push the pistons back further, a c-clamp sandwich with the pad and the caliper body does the trick. I can't think of any reason to push a piston back further than what the pad will do, squeezed against the caliper housing.

Thanks Dave. I have seen those versions and am looking for something more like the tool pictured in the Porsche Shop Manual. It's sort of the reverse of a bar clamp. Instead of the jaws squeezing something together they force the pads apart. When closed, the distance across the jaws is about 1/2 inch, just enough to slip between the pads. Slick!

Do you mean like this?

This and many other handy tools are available from Swedish cheap tool chain Biltema. This doesn't mean they are only available from them. Usually same tools are sold by other brand in other parts of the world. They are all made in China mostly and companies which make them do not want to limit themselves only to small Scandinavian markets. I would be surprised if this same tool wouldn't be available in US. In what shop is other matter.

For the S4 brakes, at least, none of the common ones work. The one Erkka shows is one I would like to find stateside. I can usually lever the pad back using a medium screwdiver sideways between the retention spring and the pad backing.

This one is kind of like the WSM one, but rather pricey.

hmmm, I'll be in Helsinki in mid spring, perhaps I can pick up a couple then. Is there a specific shop or store where can I get them?

I have the one Erkka pictured ... works like a charm on 4 piston calipers, as well as 1 or 2 piston types. Cost all of $14.95 from Princess Auto ( like Harbor Freight in the US).

Local Biltema is close to airport. It's only about two miles from the terminal. Runways are long white lines in upper left corner on map and terminals are right below them. Shop in at center of the map.

There is other store in Espoo some 16 miles west of center of Helsinki.

Rod, get in touch before you arrive and maybe we can set up something like take you shopping if schedules permit. They cost 13.90 euros, about $16-17. Just be warned. That tool is not only handy device they sell. You might have serious problems geting out of there without spending $$$.

If you can't make it, I'll go there every now and then anyway and can pick few for you and drop them off to your hotel for example. On geting them through Finnish and US customs you are on your own.

Great, I'll let you know when my schedule is more definitive. I should know in about a month.

Thanks

Take a look at http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.as...K-BRK-J&CTMP=1 This one mimicks the one in Finland, without the plane fare and customs issues. US$35 There are probebly others available with a little more google effort.
