CAM TENSIONER HELP!!
I have a 1985 S, I'm replacing the cam chain tensioner 1-4. I ordered replacement to ensure it would not be an issue, the new one does not match the old one! The bolts that hold the oil tube are different sizes, old 10mm, new 8mm. Has anybody ran into this, the oil check valve is one of thos bolts in an 85!

The updated superceded tensioner uses a different bolt and oil pipe as I recall I did not realize you had bought a new tensioner when you asked me about the bolt.

Resurrecting this old thread - I Need Help too
I am in the middle of timing belt/wp job and am also replacing timing chains and tensioners in my MY85.
I bought 2 used new style tensioners with the oil pipes and banjo bolts to be able to replace the pads.
Issues I am having installing the newer tensioner:
On my MY85 to oil feed lines are opposite from pics I have seen for the newer 87+ tensioners. My fittings bolt to the head on the intake side of the head, while the attached pics from 87+ look like they are on the exhaust side of the head. See pics I hijacked from other threads below. Because of this the oil feed lines are wrong, on the passenger side, the feed line fitting is 90 degrees off. On the drivers side, the bend is wrong.
Anyone fitted the newer tensioners to the MY85 run into this and how did you connect yours? The banjo bolts on the newer style are smaller, the older ones had check valve built in, so seems like cannot use the original tubes.
Another thing I noticed, there is no oil check valve in the head on my car like show in the WSM. If there is no check valve in the head and no check valve in the banjo bolt, will that cause a problem?
Why can't things just be simple????
Thanks for any suggestions,
Glen

Porsche superceeded all of the tensioners to the later design found in the '87 and later engines. When used in an '85/'86 engine, they require a special oil line to allow them to work in the early heads. I can get you the part numbers that you need to order/find that work in this application, if you have not already solved this problem. The oil lines were, at one time, very difficult to get...I don't know if they are still available.

Greg, please see if you have the part numbers for the line to work in the early heads when you get a chance. Hopefully they are available somewhere.
Thanks,
Glen
Roger, I'll PM Danny, thanks.

Glen,
Just got of the phone with Danny.
The oil pipe for the 85 is different to the 86.
You need the oil pipes from the 86 to make the later 87+ tensioner work in the 85.
Part numbers are 928 105 213 03 1-4 & 928 105 214 03 5-8.
You use the bajo Bolts from the 85 to complete the installation.
928 105 213 03 is $30 and there are 6 left in Germany
928 105 214 03 is $52.16 and 40 in Germany.
If you need new allow a couple of days for me to get them.
Try Jim B for used.

Roger,
Thanks, just spoke with Danny too.
The answer is to use the 86 oil pipes, S4 banjo bolt to the tensioner, the 85 banjo bolt to the head and NO CHECK VALVE! Said its worked fine for more than 27K miles.

Just finished up this job today, got the oil pipes from an 86, bank 1-4 is part number 928.105.213.03, worked perfect.
Bank 5-8 was a different story, the part number is 928.105.214.03 for MY86. The bends were correct and the fittings for the banjo bolts were facing the correct way, but the pipe was 32mm too long.
I took an oil pipe from a MY87+ which was the correct length and carefully bent the pipe to match the angles of the MY86 pipe and it worked perfectly.
So, the conversion can be done, need Bank 1-4 pipe from MY86 and the Bank 5-8 pipe from a MY87+ and carefully bend pipe to fit properly.
