Latest Project - 5 Speed to Automatic conversion
Hi,
I'm about to embark on a new project and convert a 5 speed to a 4 speed automatic. The first car, before I work on the 82 and 80 Euro 5 speeds, will be a very nice 86.5 5 speed I just acquired.
5 speed 928's were just not meant to be and we all know the car was designed for the silky smooth Mercedes auto box. It was just that some Porsche purists wanted the 5 speed box and that pushed Porsche to make it. Otherwise it at least answers the question: If it (the 5 speed) was so good why did they make so few of them.
Both my 5 speeds are a PITA IMHO.
So anyone out there BTDT?
I have a 4 speed autobox with diff and TT.
What else is needed? Different gauge cluster, different brain? Different wiring?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Once I have finished this first project and have completed it to my personal satisfaction I will be talking to the "Big 3" (does not include D***K) about marketing an all inclusive kit complete with instructions. All it will not include is the beer and that big silly grin once you have completed the job and are flying down the road in your auto controlled supercar.
I am sure that 928 International have a number of auto boxs that could be used.
My sales strategy will be twofold : -
1)To rid the market of the blight of the stick shift boxs and thereby increasing the desirability of the auto.
2) To put to bed once and for all the myth that the 928 stickshift is better and in doing so make available to a bigger market the delights and sheer perfection of the best auto box in the World.
Then watch the market value of our cars go up and up.
Disposing of the 5 speed boxs will take place every 6 months at a predetermined EPA approve Bessemer Furnace facility. This is very important as to allow them back into the marketplace would defeat the object.
I will keep you posted on my progress.
Thanks,
Roger

Oh Roger... I didn't think you'd go this far... the shame... the shame
However on the upside - it should make 5 speeds even more valuable than they already are - so I say - go for it...!

Roger, interesting. I admire your spirit!! ..... I was thinking you could start a unique automatic box service. Take a core and return a 6-speed with tiptronic and built-in coolers. I'm tired of Godzilla's 5-speed box, it's just too zippy, so I'll be your very first customer. CAN'T WAIT!!!
Roger you are a visionary.

I agree with Andrew about you going the wrong way with this one. Everyone always asks about going auto to manual and its always suggested to just sell the car and pay more for the 5 speed. But still some go ahead with the conversion i suppose.
But going from a manual to an automatic, i would seriously just sell the manual and buy a nice auto, obviously if youve got too much into the car that you wont part with it then by all means go for it but i imagine it would cost you $3000 plus in used parts on top of the install. I am not sure but i imagine that the torque tubes are of different lengths, as well as the drive shafts, although i could be wrong. I guess you would just buy a wrecked auto and go that route, i wouldnt suggest you buying the parts individually, buy a whole car. An 82 car could probably be picked up for less than $3000 then you have the whole rest of the car to part out.
Is the manual in your car completely shot, if it still runs and drives i would strongly suggest you just sell it and buy an auto car. I would also think that with already low values for the autos compared to manual cars, that you would get less for a converted auto then an original one. But I am sure you have your reasons for doing this.
Good Luck

I think this is Roger's attempt at proving that all Texans are politicians, I mean idiots, I mean... nevermind. Go ahead and increase the value of my 5-speed to several times your sissy slushbox.

Finally, someone that has come to their senses! The autobox is just better all around. Stronger, no fussing around in traffic, set it and forget it, none of those pesky synchros and extra pedal that gets in the way. And you can just keep your foot in it from zero to 170. Go for it, Roger!

First of all: Oh my god.
Secondly: Let me know how much you want for those 5 sp parts. I need all of the conversion parts to go from an auto to a 5 sp. Everything from the pedal assembly, flywheel, torque tube on back. I beleive I also need the tranny mount cross member or something like that. Not sure I have the budget for all the parts right now, but I'm sure we could work something out.
Thirdly: We should look into a trade. I've got a nice 85 auto that I would consider trading for a nice 5 sp of similar vintage and condition.
