Roger re-paints all of his red M&M's blue.

I drove a 91 auto and 91 5sp alternatly for several months. They each had there high points.

Roger, you might be right that the 928 was designed to have an auto, but the addition of a cupholder to my 5 speed has fixed that.

Actually, this maybe a buzz kill for roger, but arent the early cars bodies different for auto and manual cars? I thought they had more clearance in for the autos, and in the beginning they had 2 shells, one for each trans, but after 88 or something they made jsut the auto shell?

I could be wrong

I think you're right, there's just not enough room for the autobox in the 5-speed body.

S4 or younger have same space available. Earlier ones need doable body changes. Even 3sp to 4 sp auto conversion needs some mods I think as 4sp box is larger.

Gearbox, correct style TT, rear subframe, gear lever, brake pedal, vacuum line from engine to gearbox, gages and some other small items. What is really going to kill this idea is plate to cover clutch slave hole on lower bellhousing. That's too tough one to solve.

Good point raised here: Jörg Austen writes in his book "Porsche 928 - Die technische Documentation des Transaxle-Actzylinders" under model year 1984 (E-Program):

"The floor pans of vehicles with manual transmission and the automatic are standardized. The automatic version is continued, with the somewhat narrower rear seats."

So, Roger, if you are planning to convert models built before 1984, consider throwing in a floor pan revision kit to your solution...

Have fun!!!

Ok, they dropped narrow tunnel manual body already when 3sp automatic was discontinued. Was both bodies still same after S4 introduction with larger torque converter?

I'm wondering if Ferrari owners have the same thought? Why would you pull a beautiful engine like a Testarossa?
Porsche designed an engine in the early seventies that is still a very nice design.

What is so advanced on a V-8 pushrod design?

Buying engine parts at the Autozone is not an option.
Only a true German understands the deep thoughts behind egineering from the world's only independent sports car manufacturer.

Isn't Powerslide a KY product? The nice thing about the auto box is that it really adds to the 50/50 balance of the car. A clever move by Porsche to eliminate the horrible underweight--understeer condition found in all manual 928's. When I track my 5spd, I pull the front seats and sit in the rear. It REALLY gets the torque to the ground. Kibort said it best when he mused that "it's not the gearing that matters at the track, it's how smooth the shifts are. Sometimes I wish I had an auto. My left calf is so big I can't wear anything but shorts and may have to switch to kilts soon".

I little'known fact is that in the later models (GTS) Porsche just installed auto boxes into all 928's, and on some added a dead pedal and a "sport shift program and pattern" which fooled owners into believing they were actually shifting a 5-speed, all the while the excellent MBenz 4-speed auto and its "kupferschlussel guggelhupf" programmable controller was similating manual shifts. Pure genius.

H - you made me laugh with this!

My left calf is so big I can't wear anything but shorts and may have to switch to kilts soon".
Sometimes crawling along in traffic... I get to thinking an Auto Trans would be nice... I always thought a selectable crawler gear with a mini-torque converter would be a perfect solution to the leg bulging pain issue...

Meanwhile... I'll order a few Kilts!

Alan
