Default Lifting the 928

I know its a really simple question, but i'd rather not damage anything!
Well i'd love to get a set of the lift bars i've seen pictures of on here, but I think shipping to the UK might be costly!
Before these were invented, how did people safely lift their car onto stands to work on the underside?
Do I still use the factory jack points with my floor jack? Where do people position their stands?
On my Mercedes, I just stick it under where the suspension mounts to the body, but i'm afraid of doing this on the 928! The frame rails already look as though they've been abused, so definately not on them.

Ben-

First off I only use jack stands on the factory jack points.

The way I did it before getting the lift bars was to jack up via the front jack point so the tire is just off the ground and then release the jack. This will cause the front end to sit high and give you enough room to get the jack under the front spoiler. From there you have two choices. Some jack on the front cross member cover plate without issue (although I never do because it doesn't look strong enough) or you can jack on the skids at the front end of the frame rails (where the front of the control arm get bolted on). Jack the car up and place jack stands under the front jack points.

Once up, you can now jack up the rear of the car via the rear cross member. This is a solid piece of metal and definitely strong enough to handle this. Then place jack stands under the rear jack points.

Done.

You should investigate what surface shipping would cost for the lift bars. Maybe less than you think. It now take less than 3 minutes to get my car up on stands! Lift bars are good!

I'll second that. It might be worth it if there is a lower cost shipping method that might take a bit longer to get to you.

I used my porken lift bars for the first time this weekend and they are a god-send. I've always cringed when it comes to lifting unibody cars, and especially the 928, but now its a no-brainer. I couldn't be happier with the lift bars. -Ed

The car's weight distribution makes it easy to jack from the rear jack points and place jack stand under the front jack points.

If you want the car on four jack stands, then use the rear crossmember for placing jackstands under the rear jack points.

It sounds like you also need Jim Moorehouse's CDs.

Funny how it turns out this is one of the most intelligent questions ever asked by a newbie.

Thanks!
I really want to make sure its jacked up correctly and safely on stands before I do any work on the underneath. I know in an ideal world, I should have a 2 post lift with the amount of work I do on my own cars. Changing the exhaust system on my Mercedes was tricky to say the least on jack stands!
I think a set of workshop manuals on CD would be a great idea. I like trying to improvise when they say 'use special tool xxxx'
I'll investigate on the shipping of the lift bars, they'd be really handy to have.

Regards,
Ben

Hey, how about Skyjacker or Superlift? I hear they make some really nice lift kits!

Question Where can I get lift bars for 928S4???

I need a set of lift bars.

I am new to this 928 thing, but I need to be able to lift this car and seems like everyone is praising lift bars.

Anyone have a set they want to sell? Know where I can get them?

Thanks
Paul G.
