i did a search and tried a few things.
but maybe you folks have an updated version on where i can look
for remedy.
let's just say i start from scratch
my instrument lights are out, but my odometer and RPM gauge work.
all the warning lights seem to come on ,too
when i turn the key...
so what can i do?

it is a 1983
also i was wondering about the buttons on the lower side of my door
they don't seem to work but i remember on my old 944 i had something in that area to open the trunk.
what are the other 4 for?
how do you like your cayenne ,scott. i think the front looks darn hot , although i am not too font about the back...looks sort of VW-ish, if you see what i mean.

cd,
If you mean the buttons just inside the threshold of the door, one is a hatch release (pull up on it with the door open) and the other is the front to rear audio balance or fader control. I don't think there are any buttons on the actual door.

Custom install? There are four sections to the change holder just below the armrest. Quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies? With no coins, all you see is 4 buttons.

i feel like a mega dork now.
my first feeling was it's just that, a coin holder.
but i i thought i felt a cable running to it from the rear.
anyway, today i did some more investigating and i found that the mirror control was dangling inside the door (!) and the floor light ,too.
and guess what else i found out? that omnious button thingy is a coin holder (duh).
remember the instument lights, i was moaning about?
the instrument lights were all turned down (what else) and i saw that there is a red light on (rear lights).
hmmm what the heck is that for, i wonder...
new gremlins are... the mirrow control- not working
and the right window not going anywhere.

May all your electrical problems be simple misunderstandings. There are many more ahead. For instance, I pulled over and parked with my right turn signal on. When I got out, a warning gong kept chiming. Turns out it's a European parking light warning system. There are a dozen more. You're only a dork until you figure them out. Welcome to the club.
Regarding the mirror switch, I would check connections in the armrest.

you mean run the wires back and check if some of them are broken from opening the door all the time?
that is what i thought of first.. then i got the electrical cleaner can out and sprayed the heck out of the controls. the fuse is ok
but apart from the mirrors my rear wiper does not work either and no AC and i wonder if the cruise control works, not that i need it but that would raise moe Q's as to what may cause the mirrors not to work.

After a cop pulled my ex-wife over for speeding she gave a litany of difficulties. Eventually he let her off, because she had too many problems. He did not have the time or access to deal with them one at a time. That is exactly what you have to do. Make sure you have work shop manuals and wiring diagrams and you will be able to work through most problems. In the end remember Jim's advice "relay, relay, relay". Good luck.
