short bolts go in the holes that are lower down on the face of the water pump. For example, the holes along the edge of the wp are slightly raised in comparison with some of the holes further in on the wp. make sense?

If you get the bolts in the correct holes, the exposed shanks under the WP are the same length.

I'm sure someone's got a better answer/diagram, but from this $13 assembly of fasterners, the 8 yellow cad bolts go around the periphery of the pump, and the 5 unplated bolts go in holes around the neck of the impeller shaft. Of course, the two machine screws are for the timing pointer, and the short plated bolt and hex bolt are for the tensioner-to-waterpump bracket and the end of the tensioner arm, respectively.

I know that 8+5 only add up to 13, and that that many descriptions of the WP bolts list 14 bolts. I may very well be missing one, but 13 got the job done on my '90 which hasn't leaked coolant in nearly 300 miles of driving YMMV.

EDIT: I was right, MilwaukeeShark's got the better diagram. That's great!

EDIT #2- disregard my comments about 13 vs 14. Clearly it was 14, and I was short one bolt in my kit. Must have ended up reusing one bolt.....

The "missing" bolt #14 holds the timing belt cover on. About 2.5" long, passes through a sleeve that's in the middle of the cover.
