Awesome numbers there John! That is some tire-shredding torque you got there I have to get my Callaway dynoed here soon after I get my new clutch broken in.

I am really interested in learning more about your set up. with those torque numbers. I am wondering how high the cylinder pressure is and how much overlap and or if the exhaust cam is helping evacuate the cyl.

Real interesting numbers man....

This was just a budget build...nothing fancy. I'm really wishing we would have used better turbos on this car...the results would have been much more impressive. The cams are just stock 84 US cams...there is just a tiny amount of overlap...these are a step below the 79 US cams and above the 81 US cams.

I like to call this build my "spare parts bin" build, because that is what this was...a leftover here, a leftover there...it all came together in the end.

Onto 5.0 liter work! So much to do, yet so little time...

Very nice work and those are very impressive numbers!

Have you considered using a VNT type turbo on the S4 project? The variable "housing" makes them work like 2 turbos in 1.

nice work john this 16v could run with the 32v boostards no problem... I think we can retire that saying "just sell your 16v and get an S4"

John, for updated turbos were you still thinking of staying in the IHI line so the flanges (hopefully) will bolt up the same, or were you considering another brand/hybird?

I'm not a fan of the IHI line...it's rather Mickey Mouse in my opinion. This is an old IHI frame size that dates back to the late 70s. I tried to talk him into a set of K26-8 for this car, but the $$$ just to get this car decent was more than we ever expected. (Please see reference to "WISCONSIN DESTROYER")

Interesting cam profiles Hacker...you can really see the differences in the lobes from 79 to these 84 cams...same lift but the 79 has a much fatter lobe. These are "pointy" to say the least.

The S4 will be wearing the GT series Garretts...these are very small, yet extremely responsive and powerful. For example, the IHI units in this car have a 2.50" major and 2.125" minor on the turbine. The turbines in the S4 have a 1.86" minor and like a 2.2" major or so....yet they will outflow these SUBSTANTIALLY...the difference is in the wheel design...they are 9 bladed little flame throwing bastards! Built in clip with the ball bearing centers...less resistance and lower inertia with a smaller wheel that flows more gas. Boost response on the S4 will not be an issue. Besides this is a V8...I really don't need boost until about 3000 RPM...but when I want it I want it to come on hard and I want it all. It is like having built in traction control. If you think it is too much, just lift the right foot.

I've been projecting the numbers all day...considering this car made 480 ft-lbs at a low 4200 RPM with the not so hot cams, tight hot sides and crappy compressors...well you get the idea....the S4 should really be interesting to say the least.

I'm just sitting here imagining what a set of 79 cams, better turbos and another 4 or so lbs would do for this car....I need to STOP now while I'm ahead! The real project has waited long enough...

Send the truck to pick this beast up so it can get back to the Sunshine State!
