Yes, but how much have you been paying lately?

Although I avoided it entirely somehow, we used to have pharmceutical grade tablets in Berkeley in the late 60's manufactured by Stanley Owsley. The tablets had his initial embossed into the surface. He had a professional-grade manufacturing operation in the nearby suburb, Orinda. I remember watching a guy buy 2 MacIntosch amps at a stereo shop in Berekely around that time. These amps were about $2k each - very serious money then. He signed the receipt - Stanley Owsley. That's the closest I came to LSD, although I should acknowledge that I attended the Trips Festival in SF in 66.

But, back to the present and your question...

I bought an used LSD unit for $950 recently from 928 Intl. When you buy a used tranny, whether it has LSD or not is usually not much of a factor in the price...maybe a few hundred if anything. The price of the tranny is also quite variable depending on miles, whether it has been rebuilt, AT or MT, early or late model. I've seen good used 4-speed AT for $500; 928 Intl sell rebuilt AT for $2K exchange, MT rebuilt for $2.5K. Not sure if that includes the diff, but it really should since the ring and pinions are factory matched pairs. They list used LSDs - early for $650, later (83+) for $950.

Here I thought the early LSD units were more desierable due to the higher lock up.

Thanks for the 928 International suggestion.
Knowing nothing of 928 transmissions, what is involved in installing a limit slip differential into a 5 speed (86 1/2). What other components and gaskets are needed? If a person has have decent wrench skills, is this a do-it-yourselfer?
Thanks again.

I haven't installed one but have planned to. You need some shim packs to get the backlash right (determined by the right-to-left alignment in the case). In some years, the battery box may interfere such that you may have to drop the crossmember to get the case below the box. There are a couple of guides to doing the install but I don't have the links handy now - will tonight.

Default Installing limited slip?

Thanks for suggestions where to find a unit.
Beyond the limited slip differential itself, what other components are needed for the swap? Gaskets and what else?
Am I accurate that any LSD unit will fit into any transmission?
Is reasonably a do-it-yourself project if a person has some wrench skills?
Thanks
Mark

nope. MY stuff needs to match or it's a real mess to retrofit. plan on dropping the rear end or fuel tank to get access (since I had a fresh trans, I had the tank pulled to replace all the rotted 20yr old rubber stuff under there)...

I got mine from 928 intl also.. they had recently bought out a trans shop and had a bunch of them at some pretty good prices, iirc..

just for fun, I had all the bearings replaced and a custom shim/clutch pack installed in mine to increase the lockdown a tad, but you'd need a machine shop to do all the bearing work, so it's easier to just take it to a decent trans shop and let them mess w/it, imho.

also a good time to ck the CV's and boots, axle bearings/seals, etc WYIT.

iirc, earlier units use more shims and clutch plates, but either version can be built w/different thickness shims to vary lockdown to some extent.

Mark:

What year 928? There are two year ranges for the LSD: pre-83 and 83+. In 90 Porsche went to hydraulic PSD. The LSDs fit AT or MT.

IIRC, later LSDs can be fit to earlier trannies with shims, and earlier LSDs require expensive machining to fit later trannies. Later LSDs can be rebuilt to the same 80% lockup as early LSDs.

Just as a data point, I paid @$300 to have an LSD (purchased from 928 Intl) installed in a transmission several years ago. The tranmission was already out of the car though.

Ok, makes sense. All I knew going into this thread is Jim Page has a 2.75 78-79 R/P with an early LSD in an S4 5-speed transmission. I know he said it was not exactly a bolt in swap.
