Default Yet another wheel question: about the weight?

Hey All,

I have a new set of wheels but my question concerns the difference in weight:

My original flats 16" x 9" rear with SO3 weighs 47 pounds.
The new carrera copy 18" x 10" with 295/30/18 Michelin Pilot Sport N2 weighs 56 pounds.

I know that lighter is better, but is 9 pound extra acceptable for this size?

Thanks

Paul

that kind of weight is not a big deal. I was regularly racing with two sets, each tire and wheel being 5lbs difference. most important was the shape of the tires, not the weight. so far, my absolute fastest times have been with the toyos, which are 5lbs heavier than the old S03 hoosiers.

now, the larger tire itself will be a few lbs difference.

Paul, I think your original flats are 8" wide, not 9". Just going from 8" to 10" in width and from a 245 to a 295 tire is a big difference.

FWIW, the Turbo II hollow spokes in 11" width with Pirelli Pzeros, 295/30 18 weighs 51#. Fronts hollow spokes 8" and 225/40 weighs 41#. Very light wheels.

Thanks guys,

so if I understand correctly, that copy is not bad at all @ 56 pound for the combo 18" x 10" with 295 tire.
That's what I wanted to know.

I am looking to buy a set of those turbo II hollow spokes... posted in another thread. the front offsets are indeed not an issue?

When I replaced my 16" flatdish with the 18" Carrera III's (235/40 front, 265/40 rear) I gained 24lbs total.....the fronts were only 1 lb each heavier and the rears were about 11lbs eac heavier...42lbs each for the 16" (front and rear were the same, but rears were quite worn)....53lbs for each rear now 43lbs for the fronts.

I thought the extra tall tire would hurt the gearing + the added weight would make the car feel sluggish...but the grip is so much better.....928's really come alive with bigger tires....it is totally worth it!!

Its a non issue with street car and such a small factor in racing its barely worth considering. I regularly change my rear tires from the 305/30 hooseirs to the 305 35 toyos. thats near a 1" diameter difference! ive never noticed a bit of difference. in fact, my fastest times are with the taller tires. (and they are 6lbs heavier per rear tire as well. that 1" or 4% only shifts up or down the gear sets and all trade offs we talk about apply. (advantages in some speed range and disadvantages in others, but the net is usually not a big difference)
