Default Sunday Tinkering Session - Alamo, CA

We will be replacing some heater control valves, checking HVAC vacuum systems and maybe swapping out some steering rack bushings this Sunday at my place beginning at 11 am. Drop by if you are in the SF East Bay Area. PM me for directions.

Bill,

I will be there this time, with a 928 no less. I have a new heater valve that I was going to put into the other car, but I actually think "red" needs it. Then again, I hardly use the air con anyway. I'd rather put the bottom pieces on my car (aluminum undertray, spoiler). Maybe flush the PSD ?

Whatever you are in the mood for.

What can I bring for the gang ?

Rob

I changed my heater valve just before leaving for Denver and the OCIC. I used an Audi valve. It is all metal. I think it is better than the stock plastic part. I heard about it on this forum, but I gave the part number away at the OCIC to Garrity. He has the original box end with the number and I forgot to get it back from him. Guess I'll need to go back to SLC to get it.

The part was described previously as an Audi 5000 1983 heater valve, NAPA BK 6601410 - it has a metal housing, but is reported to have a plastic valve.

John Pirtle mentions and shows a generic NAPA model that has a plastic housing but metal valve, described as overall sturdier that the original 928 piece.

Mine split open during a race a few years back and I nearly fried the motor.

I will go look at the NAPA Audi and generic part.

Ron - Come on over if you want to tighten those front wheel bearings. It's a quick job. Does your steering rack need replacement or just new bushings?

It seems the rack needs to be replaced, and the motor mounts are so bad that the belly pan is touching the bottom of the engine. And while the rack and mounts are being replaced, I may as well get to the pan gasket. Thanks for the offer. I can get to the bearings, but there is no point in just doing them and not changing the other things. I should have stopped in Nevada and gambled to get some cash for these things. But since I don' t gamble, I wouldn't know what was happening anyway. And if that isn't all, I am getting an intermittent "Coolant" warning. Sometimes it comes on and then goes away a little later. Sometimes it doesn't come on for a week, or it comes on every two days. I only need to add about an eighth of an inch of water when it does to make it go away. I suspect I need a pressure test. There is no oil in the coolant, and no sweet smell. Must be a leaky hose, or a defective float.

OK, Ron. You do have a major job there. Yeah, on the coolant thing, most likely a flakey float. There are some threads on repairing it.

Bill
I have an all metal heater valve I bought from specialists over a year ago....it looks to be all metal with rubber-metal internals? I guess they don't have them anymore?

See ya at 11
