Default signal for accesory tachometer: customised pod

here is a couple of pics of my pod customised. it started with replacing the auto tranny for a GTS 5 speed and the lack of any signal for the speedo, hence the need for an accesory speedo... so ive ended up replacing all the gauges, mainly as i couldnt see any of them through the smaller momo steering wheel, ive put the oil pressure, master caution and tach up into a better line of sight without obstructing the view forward. im adding a shift light and an oil temp gauge as well. the gauges are mechanical aside from tach, speedo (abs signal driven) and fuel. its not complete yet..

how do i drive the tacho (yeah i know, into the rev limmiter..) ?? the diagrams that come with it say to use the coil negative but our cars have two coils?? does this matter or can i simply have a wire from each converging at the tach?

Just a thought I had when you mentioned mechanical gauges...If you have any pressure gauges (i.e. fuel, oil, etc) it would be prudent to get an isolater kit so that you will not end up with the sending fluid in the driving compartment. Thatd be very bad if something went amiss.

mmmm... might be a good idea too, i was thinking about oil leakage at the guage end especialy if im running with synthetic.

Hi Nick

Thats a lovely job...

I was thinking of extra guages for my S2 ,,,BUT NOWHERE to put them

I thought about an A pillar pod..but the only good ones I have seen are made by the big 3...intended for LHD cars lol....oh well....think some more

Is yours back in car yet ? Id love to see pictures in situ ?

All the best Brett

Hi Nick,
You should be able to use the standard 928 tach signal, if yourt new one has programming ?

The signal to the tach is +12v and is at 2 x engine speed. Usually you can program such devices....

brett, are you coming to castle coomb? assuming you and the car arent blown to bits it should be functional by then so i can show you more of my solution - but it did involve sacrificing the pod..

john, ive been wondering about your sharktuner, i should look at your website. the tach came configured for 8 cylinders, i chose it based on its sweep with the compressed scale 0-2 (nothing happens there) and nice open readings out to 7k. most accessory tachs o to 8k so you loose some dial real estate with the 7-8k, effectively they only give you a 180 degree sweep between 0-6k. whats the minimum system requirements for the software, would it be possible to permanetly install a sharktuner to change maps on the fly? i might need a boost gauge in my future...

Hi Nick
It seems that that you may need to add some circuitry to drive your tach - a simple divide by two circuit.

As regards the Sharktuner, you need a laptop running a later version of Windows. What do you mean about swapping maps ? You could utilise cat and non cat maps, tuned for different running (after optimisation with the ST) and simply select them with a switch at will.

The EZK version of the ST is due to be released in about 2 weeks time.

Hi Nick

Yes I will be at Castle Coombe.....going to see Paul A next week to see if I can get my car quiet enough to run but to be honest I doubt its possible to drop my 115 DB down to 98 Db
But will be there anyway
I will be very interested in the technical side of what you have done and will bring my camera
Boost guage eh...lol...nah go for Nitrous....
I am up to 150 Hp jetting now

And its only gone BANG once lol.... ............touch wood... hehe

All the best Brett

brett, you know i had my S2 running with ottx and rmb? that is seriously loud apparently adding on a back box can quieten it significantly. im still woried about mine and will be investing in some turned down tips at the rear, directing the exhaust and sound downward.

john, i expect i will become more savvy with the ins and outs of shark tuning in the medium term, firstly i aim to get the wideband O2 functional and then pay you a visit. running at the nurburgring showed up a few things that need sorting first though like stiffer front springs and such... will you be at castle coomb? it promises to be a fab day out, fingers crossed for the weather!

Hi Nick,
The USer Manual for the ST is on DR's website in pdf format. I hope to be at CC but it depends on some other things. Plus I don't travel well these days :-)

Hi Nick

Ummm.. I dont think the turned down tips will help on a track day...I have a sound meter and have done a lot of tests on mine....
The static test is done at 45 degrees to the exhaust at half a meter from tips and parellel to tips...on tarmac or concrete...now with turned down tips I "think" that you will keep the noise (decibels) NEARER to the sound meter.... ......instead of flowing away with straight tips.....if you see what I mean...

Drive by tests on track....I think they would probably help.....BUT you have to get by static first

Although I am going to borrow a rear S2 box from Paul A...and try it with my sound meter...but everyone says they are fairly straight through anyway...... sooooo.....I "VERY" much doubt it will lower my Decibels by 17

Never owned a genuine rear box so cannot be sure though lol

sorry i havent yet got any pics uploaded of the pod installed in the car but im really pleased with the result i hat wiring though and if anyone even remotely connected to the auto industry looked at the catastrophe ive created behind the pod they might have a seizure... but, the signal from the ecu drives the new tach at about half speed and combining the coil negatives is not so straightforward as everytime one coil drops to zero volts the other one is at 12.

any suggestions? how do i combine two coil signals to drive the tach ( its configured for 8 cylinders/8 sparks)?? or how do i multiply the ecu signal by two??

Set the tach to 4-cyl (16?) mode?

yeah i wish! unfortunately its a sealed unit, im in touch with the factory to see what can be done aside from changing the complete gauge mainly as it took them ages to get it to me in the first place.

FWIW,
Maybe take both signals ( from the coils) through opto isolators into a simple diode 'or' gate so each coil signal is passed without affecting the other, and then feed the tach.
Or have a local electronic shop build you a pulse doubler that takes the feed from one coil and produces two pulse of equal mark/space ratio in the same time as the single pulse it gets..
Both simple projects for a tech college student!
