Broken Bolt & broken EZ out!!!!!!!!!!! HELP
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/280765-bad-wheel-bearing-maybe.html
Okay so my mysterious grinding noise turned out to be a busted brake dust cover bolt grinding on the rotor....that was the easy part!
After drilling the hole & using several EZ outs I managed to break off an EZ out in the hole
The other three bolts that hold the dust cover on are fine....but the cover is slightly bowed about 1/4 inch away from the hub face...so I was thinking about some type of glue to hold it down to reduce rattling? Something that isn't super permanent in case I have to remove it in the future......maybe a little bit of JB weld? I dunno......I guess the correct solution would be to drill the whole thing out and tap it for a bigger screw.....BUT (of course) I don't have any taps & have never done anything like that before?

that is the corect thing to do dont use glue its not right and your will be better off just removing the dust cover if you try to use glue

Next time start off with PB catalyst and spray it for a couple of days, then start by drilling it to size with a left hand drill bit. It will probably come right out without an easy out with that method.
You dont have a lot of options since the easy out is broken off in the bolt. Drill it out is about the only option.
Does that bolt go all the way through ??

Brian.........you've answered your own question; drill it out. You don't have to tap new threads just use a bolt thats long enough to put a lock nut on.

I like your thinking!!!!!!!!! Of course I didn't think of this (shocker)....so now I'll need even bigger drill bits! Back to the garage I go!!

Try drilling it with a right hand drill bit from the back side (IE the same direction as you would unscrew it) after spraying it with PB catalyst.
Is it a clean enough break so it will not bind ??
If all else fails you may have to remove the hub, and get it on a drill press.
Easy outs are next to impossible to drill out. At any rate from the back side if you can drill it out to the easyout you may end up having to drill out the entire bolt down to the threads and helicoil it.
You could also try cutting a slot in the bolt end for a screwdriver if there is room and heating it up.
maybe one of these methods will work. Nothing worse than a snapped bolt.

I also meant to say the drilling trick, IE in the direction the bolt unscrews, will sometimes cause the bolt to break loose due to vibrations but I always found it would not work at all without heat or a PB catalyst drenching for at least a day.
I would start drilling the bolt step by step to the size for an easy out.
Either it will come out on its own or loosen up enough that the easy out will take it right out.
The most difficults bolts I got out that way were snapped off head studs and exhaust studs. Usually impossible, but pb catalyst is good stuff.
Good luck

Its done......the titanium drill bits set I bought just wasn't working at all....I knew EZ outs were hard...but damm......so I went to the local ACE store (since you can't get any help at Home Depot) & the salesman basically told me I was screwed...but try this new bit that just came in....works really well he says....its called an ARTU....so I thought for $4 why not....of course the little pamphlet that came with it says it will only drill hardened steel above 2K rpms with a drill press....just my luck (of course)....but I try anyway with my 18V Ryobi on high speed....it actually worked.....pretty easy...the EZ out was slow going, but the metal around it and old bolt flew out of there like butter!! :>) I used a longer bolt from the other side of the cover that had a locknut on the back of it...& its fixed!! I'll replace the other bolt when the new ones come in with the rotors on wed!! WOW.....I'm really happy!!

The list helps IMMENSELY.....I wouldn't even try to fix 10% of the things I have done if it wasn't for the list!! Rennlisters RULE!!!

Nice work, way to go!!!!
I don't think you know how lucky you are that there is a new bit that can drill that easy-out. Before this it was almost impossible to remove them. In the past, the only way was to use something hard and try to break the easy-out a part and then slowly remove the pieses one small chunk at a time.
Next time, try to heat up the aluminium before the easy-out goes into the hole.

Good going Brian. I will be the bad guy and repeat what has been said here often before: NEVER USE EZ-OUTS.
Use lefthand drill bits or just carefully drill out the old bolt progessively with standard bits until you have a shell that can be picked out.
