Default First impressions of a new owner.

Well I took the 87, 928 home with me for the weekend and burned up a little over a tank of fuel.

These really are nice road cars, a ton of difference in it and the 87 Vette.

One thing i really like about the car are the brakes.

One thing i do not like about the car is the rear end ratio and the automatic transmission, but i guess i will have to live with that.

I have not got the bugs worked out of it yet, but I will in time.

Here is what has been done so far.
Timing belt, water pump, tensioner rebuild, all of the t/belt rollers, this is not a bad job.

Serviced the passenger side window motor, not near as bad as i had thought this was going to be. The only thing i had a problem with wa the connector for the window motor, it took me longer to figure out how to disconnect it than it did to take the door panel off. Who would have thought you just had to pull HARD on it.

Parts on order, to do the following, Cam cover gaskets, rear axle seals, oil pan gasket, motor mounts , trans filter kit.

I need to order parts to reseal the intake, and will have the intake and cam covers powder coated at the same time, plus repair a lot of little things.

Hope you did the anchor motor mounts. Congrats on a nice car. Find the stomp down switch for teh trans, and make sure it's working. Whole lotta torque missing if that's not working right.

Yep, do a search for Anchor motor mounts. $25 each if I recall correctly. I used them and they are great!

I got the mounts from NAPA with the understanding if i do not like them they are going back.

I did a search on the motor mounts and it seemed like there was some question about whether you would get solids or liquids from Anchor, I am not really clear on this subject, as to witch mounts to get, but $280 a mount is to much to get them from Porsche.

I can feel the switch and it seems to be working, maybe i am missing something there.

The kickdown switch activates a relay that activates a solenoid that hangs on the rear of the transmission. Get somebody to activate the switch for you with the key on but engine not running. Pedal all the way down, you should hear the soleniod click open and closed as the pedal is pressed full down then let up some.

The kickdown solenoid provides a sudden drop in control pressure in the trans, and usually forces a downshift if your speed and gear selection will allow it. Many have installed a manual switch in parallel with the floor switch so they can "help" the trans find a better gear, without resorting to a full-throttle blast. On some early S4 cars, engaging the kickdown solenoid is a convenient way to get a first-gear start. The 'normal' start is in second gear unless you stomp the pedal hard from less than maybe 10MPH. With the 2.20 rear gear, second gear starts can seem pretty darn sluggish.

My '89 came with slightly shorter rear gears. My driving style is pretty calm these days, and I sometimes think that I'd rather have the 12% reduction in cruising RPM, in trade for whatever low-speed accelleration I might give up in the trade. First gear is just alittle too short for the way I drive, so maybe I'd just end up with a usable first and some cruising comfort.

You could also adjust the modulator for the tranny to firm up the shifts. Made a world of difference in my 81. Just do a quick search if you haven't heard about it.

Greg, don't worry about the way the car leaves the line. Your car is just coming into it's own right where other cars are running out of breath.

The only problem with that is when this car comes into its own is just about the time the owner runs out of nerve.

It is in the plans for next winter, right after I bought the 928 the better half said "I guess you are going to put a blower on that one too." My reply was not audible, to her anyway.

Superchargers with intercoolers are great power adders.

IMHO much better than doing the old style hop ups, not near the problems with passing emmissions and it does not significantly harm reliability or mileage as long as you stay far away from detonation.

You'll really enjoy it. It certainly wakes up these cars, especially the 2.20's--they just pull and pull and pull, even from the 2000 rpms that the autos want to burble around town in.
