Default radio antenna options...

I am putting my 84S back together from paint and I am considering otions for the radio antenna. I have the hole in the rear fender, and the factory power unit did not work prior to paint. I purchased a hirshmann power antenna but do not like the way it mounts and fits in the quarter panel. Has anyone tried to mount a roof fuba antenna in the stock location? Is there a "delete plug" for the fender and possibly run a hidden or glass mount antenna? I personally never have the radio on in this car, no need to when it's running! I just want to finish the last few details...

What is it about the Hirschmann that you don't like? I had no problems getting one on eBay and installing it. The newer unit is much lighter than the original and extends up longer. There was a little fudging to do with the spacers at the top, but I'm quite satisfied.

Just curious.

There have been several discussions on 'shark fin' antennas and other roof mount antennas like the later cars use. Try the search.

If you go for the roof antenna try the Bosch as fitted to late VWs - looks exactly the same as the last OE type fitted to GT / S4 and GTS and has the same locating lug and fixings. But it's $25 instead of $100!

What I did not like about the hirschmann was the spacers and alignment pieces. I have not spent any time fiddling with it, though. I thought that maybe a fuba antenna in the stock location, not on the roof, might look kinda cool...

What - fuba roof antenna in the stock rear wing location - tell me you are kidding ...!

Don't do it !

If you must - add the bosch/fuba/hirschmann roof antenna then blank the rear quarter one but don't do this mix match it will look odd to the only people who really appreciate your car (including you I imagine!).

Work at the Hirschmann stock unit you should be able to get it to look and work like new... like most things it's a bit fiddly to get it right - but worth it.

Alan,
I was talking about the roof mount.
You are right of course - the rear wing is not the place for the Fubar antenna.
I fitted the OEM Porsche wing mount unit to my Weissach because I am **** about it being stock.
Cost was $250 v $30 for the Hirschman unit you can buy on ebay.
I am sure there was little difference, allthough I can say my car is stock!!!!!!!!!!!

Roger - what car(s?) are you bringing to Denver?

I have been working on my one-and-only car for 3 days now - where do you ever find the time for your whole stable...

I just installed HID foglights - very nice, also just installed the engine extinguisher ports (documented on another post) and a water tank + pump plus plumbing for rear washers... lots of work including a lot of one off fabrication. I can defintely say mine is not all stock, although it really does not look much different above the skin... tons of stuff to do before Denver, including new tires - not sure it will all get done... BTW - I will be there early
arriving Thursday.
