I clicked off 'no issues' and still feel that way even tho my AC acted up a little. Kept me cold tho. Otherwise, got 19mpg and it sang as she went.

The idea that we are more fastidious than those that don't attend an event like the Frenzy or SITM is not what I observed. While there were some nice cars there were some ratty ones too. Since many that attend these events come for the technical information those owners tend to do their own work, therefore what they (we) drive is a 'work in progress', prone to a higher failure rate. The youngest of us is about 12 years old, the trade in time for most Honda's, Toyoto's and Land Rover's and the oldest is 28 or so. I would like to see how other cars in our class would do under similar situations. Jags, Astons, Ferreri, 911s would fare about the same, but BMW and Mercedes might do a little better, but who would drive one of those?

If that first re-tension isn't done then it is normal for the T belt warning to come on. Having not re-tensioned and having no warning has me thinking that you may have a problem with the tension warning system, and maybe a loose belt. Belt tension checks after the 1500 mile check usually show little tension change unless something like the tensioner bolt/bushings or water pump bearings are wearing.
I don't disagree with you Louie, but I haven't had any TB/WP problems with my 89 at all. I drove it about 30K miles in 9 years and had a lot of other problems because of all the time it sat in the garage. I do agree that these cars do much better if they're driven.

It just bugs me when I hear someone say that it costs $1200 to $1500 to get a TB/WP service done. Not done correctly. You get what you pay for, and I'm just wondering if that, along with the DIY jobs, is why there seems to be so many issues with noises, loose belts, having to retension over and over after short intervals, etc...

And sometimes you don't. Wasn't it Heinrich that bought an S3 with fragged heads after a $4000 dealer timing belt job?

Someone local got a $1700 quote from a dealer for a t-belt retension. That is a one hour job even with the crappy factory belt tension tool.

It isn't what you pay. It is who you pay.

It takes roughly 8 to 12 hours or so to do a TB/WP assuming no bolts are seized. That includes rebuilding the tensioner, rollers, bushings, cleaning, and lovingly coating each WP bolt after chasing the threads. Add in one or two hours if your are replacing the sprockets. If you wanted to go all-out you could save a few minutes by replacing every fastener with new.

I happily report no issues with my 81. Since installing the engine a little over 2 weeks ago, the car is running perfectly.

IIRC, it was the 85 S2 that Brendan is now selling had an $8k TB/WP job.

So what was the deal with the 928 convertible??? People out here on the west coast are saying that the driver was trying to out run the cops in a high speed chase and and lost control of the vehicle!

(EVERYBODY wants to be a Californian!...GEEZ!)

I don't know the full details so I won't contribute to the rumor, but I can say that if you are ever taged for speeding on Federal property (i.e. National park) just take the fine. It's like $70 or something like that and does not hit your insurance. It doesn't pay to try and run away - you'll never outrun a radio. If you do run, it becomes a Federal Felony! So if you speed and get caught, just look upon it as a heafty toll and move on - assuming your right have not been violated.

...yet the rumors started flying instantly. How else would the moderator of this forum, on the other coast, find out and post about it, before I even got the chance to wake up from the shock? He called it mid-engine convertible to boot, and that exageration HAD to be part of the rumor. Seems that the flare for drama about the car and the desire to kick someone when they're down far outweighed any concern for driver and passenger or desire to soften the blow. I had expected it to be different in the 928 community....and I think it is, as demonstrated by the great folks who stopped and provided every assistance possible...however there will always be exceptions, because that's human nature

Tarek,

I went through the same thing just over a year ago. I didn't even get home before the Lady's Sewing Circle were in full bla bla bla mode. They're the exceptions though. I am sorry for your accident but the pain does go away... after a year or so.

Tarek,
I hope your feeling better and that your car can be salvaged. Whenever I had crashed a car, it felt like the death of a family member.

Yeah I can relate some to that....my laptop died last week, typing now on my new one, hope to still eventually get the old one restored or at least get my email address book and such off of it. Fortunately, the really important stuff, like the 15,000 or so car pics I had on it, were all backed up!!

I'll send you an email to both of your addresses sometime today Tarek. It was great to meet you too. Keep the faith, by the time we have our get together in Daytona in Oct you will have your cab all ready to go again!
