its not entirely clear to me what you are trying to break loose. The joint where the tie rod connects to the spindle or where the tie rod connects to the rack?

Inner usually means the one to the rack. I've not BTDT, so I'm pretty much useless here. Sorry.

I have BDTD. Mine was on tight but not that tight. Make sure to use another wrech and hold the steering rack from gettting twisted too much. Too much twisting and the rack can get damaged.

just recently did mine. I have a hoist and yes I had to have a good sized wrench and some real grunt force. Couldn't imagine how I would have done it if it was on jack stands. wait.. maybe I can.........nope ........would have been alot of swearing and throwing of stuff... The only way would be to have two people lying on the ground IMHO

don't use a lot of heat. The steering rack is full off oil and the seals don't resposd well to heat either.

I agree. Don't use heat near the rack. It will come apart with the appropriate force

Usually not that bad, but recently undid a set on an '89 S4 and the driver side was stuck. The car was sitting pretty low on jack stands. The owner of the car steadied the wrenches while I sat down facing the front bumper, reached under the nose of the car and grabbed hold of the frame that holds the radiator with both hands, and with my right heel pushed with steadily increasing pressure on the end of the wrench toward the back of the car. Took everything I had but it broke loose.

I couldn't imagine doing that with the rack on the car. Good luck.

I've done a few when on jackstands: never any fun, but possible. It is better to have long shaft versions of the correct size wrenches ... but adjustables will do. You can always slip a piece of pipe over the handles to increase leverage.
I never like pulling on things when a car is on jackstands ... so set the two wrenches close enough together such that your leather gloved mitts can grasp and squeeze the two together. It is imperative to keep your fingers well out of the 'scissors' - but you can generate huge force in a two fisted squeeze - and still have a steady counterhold on the rack rod.
When they break loose, it's a lot of turns to get that puppy out .... so smuggle a beer under there: it could take a while ....
