Default Whistling sound, clutch related

Hi,

is sounds like a bird singing, and goes away when I rest my foot on the clutch pedal.

Ideas?

The clutch-fork's ball-cup bushing is shot, without a doubt.

Yes I know, totally. But why the sudden joyful singing?

I'll try to spray some wd40 up there to se if it shuts up.

Rumors say the early ball cup bushing is no longer available. What is the adequate replacement?

I would check with your favorite 928 parts supplier; I've always had excellent service with 928 International.

The hardest part of the job will be putting the clutch-fork back into the ball; you do not need to do anything with the clutch itself.

I would think the singing might be from the release bearing . It is probably spinning on the pressure plate spring fingers and putting light pressure on the pedal makes it stop spinning on the fingers and the bearing spins instead of the outer race spinning on the fingers. A new bearing is lube filled and has more internal resistance. As the lube gets displaced they can begin to work correctly. If it continues not to spin on the bearing but on the spring fingers they will get worn ! If worn badly enough the bearing pulls through the fingers and the clutch pedal goes to the floor , clutch is engaged.

thanks Jim. If wd40-ing the ball cup does nothing, I'll have to dig into PET and the WSM to try to figure out what the heck you're talking about. :-)

Is this a common problem on new T/O nearings?
Have the same sympthom with a brand new GTS pressure plate to be fried if this is the case.
What would be the proper cure?

The plastic ball cup on the end of clutch arm where it pops on the ball if it breaks and falls out you get a metallic rattle sound occasionally , pushing on the clutch pedal slightly causes the arm to be tight against the ball and stops that rattle sound. Back to the release bearing it has an inner and outer race with the bearing part in between. The outer race is held captive by the release arm which dare not spin the inner race of the release bearing protrudes through the center of the pressure plate and is retained by a circlip ring and a indexed washer plus spring washer. The pressure plate always spins with the engine and the release bearing connects a none spinning clutch arm to a spinning engine(pressure plate bolted to the flywheel). A new release bearing can be a bit "tight" probably due to the lube and rather than the bearing acting like a bearing the circlip and washer can spin on all the fingers of the pressure plate. Sometimes simply pressing and releasing the clutch several times will free up the bearing get it spinning on the bearings instead of the race to the fingers. Also some of the castle looking spring washers for the two disc release bearing appear to be a bit weak and apply less preload on the bearing to spring finger interface. Note that some have had issues with the guide tube retaining bolts being loose and interfering making noise.

Any point in using two washers instead of one when clamping the T/O bearing to the pressure plate?(for my 90GT)
This may increase the tension on the spring washer enough to keep it from spinning when new and tight?
My old pressure plate had worn fingers half way trough, it makes me very un comfortable thinking of the new plate meeting the same destiny.
(I have replaced everything, so the noice is a bit of a surprise to me)
