Default My Shark Story (Part I and II)

Just wanted to share/vent my story of my Shark.

Well I wanted one since as long as I remember, which is basically when they first came out! Always liked p-cars, there was just something about the 928. Read about them.. Dreamed about them. Saw my first one in person at a dealer while in highscool. Cut magazine ads out for them to hang on my wall when I was in college. I still remeber the one ad of the 83S, just a silouette of the car and the words 143 MPH! (that was fast back then!) Had posters of the 944 too, but the 928 was the car.

It was all just a dream back then. P-cars are expensive! Especially for a college kid. The years went by, but still kept up with all the changes of the 928's in books and magazines. The car kept evolving.

4 years ago, I moved to Florida, palm trees and sunshine! Had a good job, and it actually seemed practical to get a p-car as something to drive to work and have fun it. No sleet, no snow, no salt, no ice! Up in the snow belts of western New York/PA it never seemed like there was any good time to drive a car like that.

Thought about getting a used Boxster, but they were still up in price, and am not much of a ragtop person. Wanted something more classic. Looked at 944s. eBay, Autotrader etc. Then saw there were alot of 928's out there to be had for not a whole lot of money! Could the dream finally come true?? I had to do some research and find out.

Well of course there is no such thing as a free lunch, and if something sounds too good to be true it probably is. But it was possible to get a good car, for not too much money. And it would even be practical to own, doing all the wrenching myself. I had learned that just working on my Durango. Labor is outrageos, and parts are marked up beyond belief! It is an order of magnitude higher for a p-car! A $400 brake job on my truck was $35 doing it myself. Honed my old mechanic skills and started doing my own work, and the money saved, I but into tools! Air Compressor, all the goodies! :-)

My search was on. For cars, as well as resources. Found something called Rennlist! and Phil Tongs and John Pirtle's sites, the Big 3, all the goodies. Test drove nearly a dozen cars in a 100 mile radius looking for the right one. Had to be at least an '85, preferable an '86.5. But really wanted an S4! Almost got a '93 GTS for $17K! Kicking myself for missing that one. But just did not find the right car at the right time. Plenty of near misses, though. S4's that just seemed like I was driving a chariot! Yes the 928 was everything I had dreamed, just could not find the one...

I had all but given up on finding my Shark, Finally settled on a 944 turbo. Something I could play around with. Fun car. Quick! The turbo slams you into the seat. But it wasn't a shark. Loved driving it, but dreamed I was driving a 928! Hell, I enjoyed taking out the garbage at nite just to image I was walking past my big black shark!! lol Dreamed of going to SITM one day!

So last year, when sharks were just fading dreams, I saw her!! She was black.. with chrome C2's silver tinted windows.. I thought I fell asleep driving and just imagined it. But it was real.. Sitting at a German auto dealer, between a 911 and a 914.. My heart was racing.. I had to go back and check it out. I did the next day.. She was beautiful! It was raining but I just stood there looking at her. So shiny.. Peeked around back and underneith to see if she had an RMB.. No, she had a custom single exhaust from the cats, with just a sport muffler! I had to hear her!! They gave me the key!! NO START!! Dead battery :-( I came back the next day, no change. Called try to see what the deal was. Confusing. The salesman was at another lot, other side of town. So there was such a disconnect. Kept going back to see the car. It was alway raining. That's what happens during rainy season in Florida! lol

But there was just something about her. Finally did get inside and start her up! SWEET! What a sound. And she was equiped. Alpine CVA-1004 reciever/video display, Alpine GR-320 Equalizer. 12 CD changer, bazooka bass. Only a couple small cracks on the dash, none in the pod. Drivers seat had a few big cracks. But not too bad. 153k miles. Hmm. Interesting. Started thinking more and more. She was there under consignment. Was $14k, but just went down to $11 hmm. Can I do this?

Started talking to my credit union. They said sure! Called the dealer. Car was gone!! Consignment was over! It went back to the owner! Oh no! The dealer had a hard time tracking him down, but finally got a hold of him and wanted to talk. I hadn't even taking a test drive yet!

Ok, the test drive finally! In the rain again as usual. She was sitting there, in a store parking lot, where we aranged the meeting. (I live out of town and he on the other side of town). He was waiting outside on the curb. Talked a bit, and then we said lets go. Punched a button on the fob and she fired up! Remote start! There is nothing like hearing the BWWAAA when you are outside next to it!! :-) She handled great! Squeeled the tires going into second! Seemed great to me. Now the history. Recent $4000 tranny rebuld. New axels, new shocks, new (1yr) MAF, new A/C compressor, new tires, recent LH brain (3yr) new plugs/wires, recent timing belt/water pump. Good Compression/leakdown. I mean almost everything was covered recently! And he had receipts! over $20k the last 6 years he had her! Plus he had a bunch a small parts fro Jager and 928 intl. to go with it! I am like wow! He seemed like a cool guy, very easy going, honest. I made a low ball offer, contingent on a PPI, and he said ok! Wow! this was it.

The bad: The paint was chipped hear and there, and it was a repaint. (from silver) Oh, and the oil pressure dropped to zero!! Yikes! He said he would have it fixed. So I talked to the mech. that fixed it, $500 for a new sender, and I had him do a PPI while he was in there. He noted damp cam cover gaskets, so they would need to be replaced. But everything else looked good. Only issue was a slight vibration at around 3500 rpm, probably the torque converter needed balances. Plus the lines to the transmission were installed wrong.

All in all, not bad. The tranny was still under warrenty, so I argued with the seller to get all that fixed first. I went ahead and got the loan, and told him I would get the car!

My Dream had finally come true!! Or had it??

Jim

Sounds like you found a decent example, you are only about an hour away, going to SITM this year?

Default Part II (the SAD part)

Ok, I was on my way to owning my dream car after so many years. Or so I thought. I waited so long. Drove so many cars. Finally found the one. And it was so on again of again, try to just get it. It seemd that the moment was here at last. The car seemd to have everything, needing nothing. He fixed the problems it had. Got a PPI. Was having the stuff fixed by him under warrenty. Everything seemed good.

I met him at the Transmission place to have the work done. They would fix the vibration and the oil lines and everything would be great. Decided that it would work out easier if I gave him the check and got the title from him right there at the tranny place. Then I could get the tags and pick up the car there the next day when it was finished. Sounded like a plan. At the time. He even wanted my mailing address, so he could send me the Alpine manuals, copies of all the receipts, and the Jager parts (door arresters and stuff). Alright. Felt so good. Exchanged info with the Tranny shop, so they could call me the next day when MY! car was ready! Woohoo!!

Never had any contact from the previous owner again. Never got the package, never returned any calls. The Tranny place couldn't reach him either. Seems he up and moved. Then the real probs began. The PO really talked uo the tranny place, he paid the over $4000 to rebuild the tranny, and they were the only place in the Tampa area the could do it. They new what they were doing, or did they? Why didn't they balance the TC? Why did they run the oil lines wrong?

Well after 3 days I finally heard from them. Not the TC. Sent it out to be balanced, and it was fine. They thought that was the prob. it wasn't. They wern't sure what it was. They didn't know much about these cars!! They were asking me! They said the PO bought parts, axels, etc, from the big 3 and had them put it on. They didn't have a clue!! They didn't know what to do! Neither of use could get ahold of the PO! So I had to trouble shot the prob. Figured it must be the TT, the dampner appeared to be damaged. They took it out and now wanted to charge me $1200 to put it back together!!!! I was like WTF!! Tried to call the PO again. Long gone. Looked at legal options. Didn't know what to do. Called DR at 928Spec. and he said to call the sheriff! What a mess! My dream was now a night mare! MY car, which I didn't even take ownership of yet, was in pieces and they wanted me to pay them to put back together! Or they would push it out on the lot, where they said that nice stereo would probably go missing!! Told me the best they could do was make it a roller, and I could flatbed it back to my place. They took it apart under warrenty, but it wasn't their problem, so I would have to pay to get it back in one piece!!! Extorsion! I never had a written quote or anything. Such a mess, so many grey areas, so much arguing back and forth with the manager and owner.

Finally I agreed to pay less than half of the $1200 just to get my damned car, after it was there almost a month!! But atleast I had my BWAAA. NOT! Dead battery!! Had to get a jump! Which is bad! I know!

Now I was finally driving her. From that awful place to work. But this wasn't the car I test drove. The slight vib. at 3500 was REAL noticable! And before I could even get to work, the exhaust fell off!! This SS 3" $1600 custom catback was laying on the side of the road!! Can it get worse? My first day of shark ownership! (Not counting all this time in the shop!) Picked the thing up with the floor mat and put it in the trunk and finish my drive to work and called to bitch at the tranny place and have them send someone to put it back on!! Well thought the never showed up, but they did, and took the rest of the exhast off and went back with it! Said they couldn't do it! I had to drive across town and have them do it at the shop!! ARRGGHH. Actually it was kinda cool at first, the sound!! open exhaust. But then the fumes got to me and I almost got a ticket! :-)

They tack welded it, and sent me on my way, or tried, because it had to be jumped again!! I made it home, finally she was all in one piece and all mine. Wife wanted to take it for a spin, whcih she couldn't do in the 944, as the shark has an A/T. Didn't mind. It was so could so see her drive away and see the view from the outside, and hear the BWWAAA thundering off into the distance, just like in my dreams.

The first thing I did was get thing on jackstands and tear into it to check the crank play at the flexplate. Looked good. There was some tension, and I released it with the pinch bolt, the typical 3-4mm. The rest didn't look good. While droping the exhaust to get to the bellhousing, there were bolts missing holding the exhaust to the manifold and most of one gasket was missing! These guys were idiots! Lucky the whole exhaust didn't go!

But mostly it was ok. For a couple weeks until the tranny stated slipping!! ARRGGHH! I can't believe it! Now almost $5000 into that tranny and it still a mess! Called them, left a message for the owner, but they wouldn't return my calls!! Not that I would want them to touch my car again!! Put her back up on the jack stands, added some tranny fluid, and found they jury rigged the shift linkage with a fuel hose and clamps. Wont always go into park! What a mess. I replaced the motor mounts while it was up on the stands (and had another Shark stop by to check it out, which was cool!).

The new mounts helped the vibration some, and the tranny is better, a little. It still looks a little low, it so damed hard to add fluid to these things!! But I'm afraid it's the B2 piston. Hope to get a chance to replace it soon.

Well, that is pretty much my story of my Shark so far. Not even a whole year yet!! I hate automatics!! Yeah, don't have to worry about shifting and clutches and all that fun in stop and go traffic, and some say they are "bulletproof". Until you have a problem!! Anyway, I still can't stop looking at her, or listening to her. Even pulling out of the driveway in another car, I look at her in the rearview mirror until she is out of site. I hope to get her fixed and drive her to SITM, but time is running out :-(

Sorry for my long winded story. Just got a little bumed thinking about the whole ordeal, and wanted to share and vent a little. It helped some. Would I do it all again? Of course! In a heartbeat!! Ok, maybe a little differntly :-)

Wow - the is one of the best, yet worst reads I have seen in a while... Really -- sorry about your luck. It definitely sounded like a GREAT deal at first, but I really feel bad about your misfortune. Best of luck with your new Shark, it would be great to see you at SITM. However, I would want to get at LEAST a few hundred trouble-free miles on her before driving up there. Keep us posted of your progress.

So, how's the vibration now?

Is it strictly RPM related? Same RPM in all gears?
Does it vibrate in Park?

Have you poked a coat hanger down the front opening of the TT to check the position of the front bearing? Should be 10 inches or less from the front TT flange.

Did you finally get the tranny fluid to the proper level. Does it slip during shifts or when full engaged?

The Vibration peaks at 3500, starts at just over 3000, is hardly noticble by 4000. On WOT, is barely noticeable. Before I changed the motor mounts, you could really feel it, now you hear it more than feel it. Mostly in the center console, near the instrument panel.

Tranny fluid still doesn't look right. When I added it, I thought I put in too much, so I drained some out, but I think I drained too much! Looks low, below the min line. Seems to slip during shifts. Like the clutch in a manual.

You said something about not being able to get it in park and the shift cable being rigged up, my shift cable is ghetto rigged and if its not put into D just right it will slip, I am ordering a new one tomorrow.

The shift cable is easy to change when the old one is not broken in the middle. Tape the new one securely to the old and pull it through. It's easy to get to the front end under the shift plate where 4 bolts hold the shift mechanism, down.

Change the tranny fluid. The tranny is very sensitive to level. Get it right. It is a pain to change and fill on the ground, and everyone has their favorite technique for getting the fluid into that awkwardly located reservoir. Thye TC should be drained as well - it has a drain bolt.

Torque tube bearing vibrations don't have that pattern in my limited experience, but I would check the bearing position. It is so simple to do while you are in there checking the flexplate. Maybe somone else will have some ideas on a vibration that fits your description.

JimBob-
What a story... Sorry to hear about your woes. However, this is THE place to get advice on the 928. We are very active in helping our fellow 928 brothers.

Sure hope you can get the car in proper running order and make it to SITM - now THAT is a party!

I hope things work out for you. Yours is a great story which illustrates the need for a qualified pre purchase inspection before acquiring any 928.

Oh wow...... I kinda I feel sick after reading the rest of your story, its gotta start looking up for you after you've gone through all that heartache! Where's M21 Sniper??? I havent seen him around lately.... maybe he can track down the PO for ya & show him his area of expertise from his Army days!! I'm sure all the resident experts will be motivated by the trouble & pain you've gone through and the challenge of the problems to help you get your Shark running as it was intended. Hopefully, you can make it to SITM too, it'd be great to meet you in person & see your good looking Shark. I'd definately suggest you send me a PM with your email address & I will add you to our Florida 928 Owner's email list. Then you can use that to help you hook up with some others driving up so you can be in a caravan of Sharks in case you have any problems up or back, you won't be on the side of the road alone. Good Luck, Best Wishes & Hang in There cause a 928 is definately worth owning! You can read in your words that you are definately addicted to them!

Yeah miss ole Snipe. He was banned for awhile, but think he gave up on the list. Wish I could find the PO! Or is it POS! lol She's a nice car, except for the tranny. Almost everything's been replaced in the car. Even a new radiator. The guy put alot of $$ into it. Probabaly got tired of that and that's how I ended up with it!! He spent more than he should. $1600 for a radiator, when he could have got a Devek one for half that. Same with the tranny. Should have gotten a rebuilt unit from 928 Intl. Of course he could have made everything up, since I never got the receipts!! Parts do look like new though.

Yeah, that was an interesting read. Speaking of Sniper, he knows a girl that posts on the old 928 board that changed her B2 out very quickly and easily. She described it step by step.

If you take your time, use the manuals and some of the experts here, you should be able to get everything going right and rescue your car from a misguided and now broke PO and slipshod mechanics. Sounds like you have the will.

Tranny fluid level should be checked warm after moving selector thru gears on a level surface. Do the filter and fluid change on a lift. I payed a small fee to rent a lift from a local garage to do it myself. Then uou can add or subtract fluid in your driveway with a large plunger thing with a hose attached by reaching under. Be careful and have someone around. Car in park, wheels secure.
