I should have added that I went back to the OEM gasket from the thin aftermarket version. That gain a mm or two.

The screen version on that link is stock for early cars.
I should have taken a pic of the ones Kevin sent. The lower piece is just a flat plate with no screen. Looks like the part on the left without the screen. (Maybe it is?) On top of that is mounted the screen cover. There are stacks of washers holding it up about 3/8".

Oh, so with the washers, you are not keeping the overhang that represents the metal band from actually not letting the oil out the sides? Did you follow that - what I said, I can't think of a better way of saying it.
Here is a better version - with the spacers, you are not sealing the sides of the band to the pan - thats the plan?

It's a two-layer approach. The lower band part is directly to the pan, then there are washers, then there's the screen top. The oil is retained in the pan by the bottom plate-with-hole.

Geez, should have taken more pics...
The scrapers themselves are the same. They did not come off the car when putting the new drains on. The new drains just bolt onto the studs that the old drains came off of.
I'm not sure what the the trap door piece looks like so can't make a comparison.

Based on this analysis, and my experience last weekend, I think every 928 that is being tracked should have a sump cover installed. It keeps the oil in the sump, around the pick-up and away from the crank.
Oil ejection may be a nuisance symptom in itself but I think it's the iceberg's tip of crank failure.

This is a really interesting thread, Mark or anybody who knows why didn't that pan work? Did the engine fail or get trouble? Forgive me if this has already been discussed but with the scrapers there will still be enough oil on the walls for lub and cooling? I was thinking when I do my engine which is getting closer and closer, that I was going to use piston squiters that I have and also my rods have drilled small end oiling, that way with all the oil/windage reduction there still will be plenty of oil around the walls. It is very scary doing R&D with such an expensive motor. As to the motor I have just built and installed in the car would I need to remove the engine to fit the scrapers?

I think we are close...
I too think we are very close to a good, tested, package of items that solve both problems.
Kevin has given us Dealership rates, and we will be adding the 928 scrapers to our catalogs for all who track the car the moment we have the final iteration tested and are certain that it works.
It will be very close to what Glen is running now, and even that has been tweeked to make it still better. Kevin has the improved windage tray and scrapers on their way to me, and after I put them in, I have races back at the Milwaukee Mile and other tracks that I ran with scraper design #1, so it will be easy for me to compare it to the new scraper design #2.
Hats off to Kevin J for sticking with it through several design versions and such, even though he has onlyu asked to be compensated the first time. All these other mods and re-fits have been provided to Glen L and myself without additional charge.
