What is it HELP!!! (brake part - RV)
Well, I had the grease cap off my right front and when I went to tap it on I heard something drop. It ended up between the back side of the rotor and splash/heat shield . Anyone recognize it???

looks like one of those internal balancing things they use to balance out the cheapy disk rotors. It is usually in the vents of the rotors?....just a swag...

I agree with Tom, looks like a balancing clip for the rotor. I don't think this will be felt although if you slowly turn the rotor and look in the vanes you should see some signs of where it was clipped on.

Tom, dead-on
I guess new rotors will be next No telling where that clip was placed on the rotor. On the opposite side, there are 2 clips. I can't see how that's SAFE . If going high speed and one of those came off and wedged between a brake pad and rotor that could be catastophic

Hi that piece of metal is probably spring steel if you rotoae the rotor you should see where it was pressed into the rotor vanes, try bending it a little bit to preload it then tap it into your rotor with a hammer

Darien, that's why it goes on the inside of the rotor. Centrufigal force should make it stay put. OTOH if it got hot enough to lose it's "spring" then somebody must have been driving the pi$$ out of it...

Here's a few pic's of the other rotor with clip in place. And yes, I can feel wheel shimmy @50-80 mph without the other installed
I just got my new rotors and they don't have them??

Either your new rotors are balanced so well they didn't need weights, or they balance it another way like grinding the vanes, or no attempt was made to balance them.
Where did you get them?

Rotors should always come pre-balanced. It is possible that the casting is dead on and the rotor did not need balancing - but unlikely. The 2 methods that I know of are 1. the metal clip method, and 2. the grind off method. My zimmerman cross-drilleds had #2. If you look at the perimeter, you'll find a small section that has been ground to achieve balance. Sorry, no picture.

I never would've known about the clips until I went to change the rotors or one fell out, like in my case
Thanks for the education

I am thinking of doing a road force balance on my car...
It is pretty good up to about 85...
ROad force will be performed at 120 or so...
I will let you know how it goes...
