Wow Clay, those contacts really had a bad case of the creeping crud! Good job, getting to it before things could get any worse! Hopefully all will be well with the roughened surfaces -- but it's soft metal, and as long as the female terminals are tight on there you should be fine. Mine were only beginning to get that thick patina, as you can see on the tips of the three main power connectos in the pic below. Also, you can see how much easier the terminals are to get to on the earlier panels.

You know, when I did this job it turned out to be more preventive maintenance than anything else. You may end up stomping a gremlin or two here. As Matt hints above, you may have some additional gremlins from futzing with old relays, but they can be surprisingly resilient too. Still, you already know you need to replace some of the relays....

Hokay all, gonna order me up a boatload of relays...been looking at prices - 928 Intl and 928 Specialists have mostly comparable prices, except on the one relay (of which there are 9) includes starter, horns, fuel pump, many others. Wally has 2 - one is about $18, one is $4.5 - the expensive one is apparently a genuine PorchPart, the other is "OEM." 928 Intl has only one at $12...not sure of which one it is...

I wonder if any of you out there opine that there's really a substantive diff between the Porsche and the OEM? Saves $100 if not...

Omigod i'm tired of this now...

"Genuine Porsche" is Genuine VW/Audi for the common relays (24 and 53). All of the common relays in my panels are labeled VW/Audi with no Porsche markings and they were probably original to the cars.

I would not sweat the difference - buy generic - you can save even more - you can get relays for maybe $3 for the standard SPST/SPDT that I would have no problem using on my car - buy a few spares also... Quality varies only very slightly. Get 40A vs 30A contacts if you can.

Yeah, doesn't matter much whose name is on them, but I tend to avoid parts made in countries whose name begins with "Ch". I agree with Alan about upping the rating on the common relays.

I think I'm going to redefine the parameters of this project.

I'm so almost there...it's a shame not to just go whole-hog and do a bunch of things...

Tried to take out the grille-thing that Mrmerlin suggested I check for water leakage...(after finding water leakage)...then discovered it actually required removal of the blower, which requires removal of the hood, and the wiper blades and the little apron deal in front of the windshield...so now all that stuff is off. It looks a lot easier to just start taking things off the engine now and cleaning them up a little bit so it doesn't look so sh**ty in there...and cleaning all of those electrical connections too...and I guess while I'm at it, I might as well just do the 900 ground points.

Maybe it would be easier to just jack up the gas cap and drive a new car underneath.

Hi Clay dont forget that since your ride is not up and running ,now is the best time replace the full set of fuel lines, you can have the lines replaced at a hose shop they can reuse the old ends, it should not cost that much and then you wont have to worry about all of your hard work going up in smoke, Stan

Whatever it was, *please* don't tell me it all began when he removed the left fuel rail and began systematically cleaning electrical connectors and replacing hoses.

This thing is a nightmare of over-engineering. Since I'm waiting on relays and a vacuum pot and going to take the blower motor in to a local shop to be refurbished, I just can't stand to sit and do nothing...it's so *old* and *dirty* in there...

The freaking gas line is *refrigerated*... !!! Aieeeeee...

I wonder if there are any James Bond things lurking down there, little daggers that pop out or machine guns or something...

No wonder I've never worked on this thing before. Ahh, well, here I am now. I wonder how I'm gonna clean the top of the motor. I'm getting way off topic of this thread...CE rehabbing...

I think Brendan started with a blown engine. This started as a clutch job...

Brendan tore his shark down to the last nut & bolt and is still trying to put it back together. He keeps buying cars and disassembling them.... he picked up an 85 and an 86 recently because he was tired of everyone ribbing him about taking 928s apart but never driving them.



Stroll on over to this thread for a taste...

Anyway, sounds like that car's going to be real shipshape whenever you get it back together...

I had a 81 that had a 4spd swap for the 3spd because the 3spd stopped shifting. New brakes, lines, suspension, busuings, and h eaders/exhaust.

I have a 78 that has had a repaint down to metal. This started when I blew a front main seal on the engine - which lead me to build a 5000 dollar engine. As I was to put that engine in, I looked at the very tired and chipped and pealing paint, and started sanding. I sold that engine and decided to "upgrade" it. The car's paing is now done, and the newer motor ready for assembly. That was 2004 I think.

In 2002, my 89 blew its LH (and ezk for some reason). We moved after that october, and I started take it apart. Since the computer was out, I wanted to put EFI, so I was looking the wires in the engine bay...

And took off the cam covers - wanted to powder coat those. Saw head bolts, and....

Real men pull engines, so....

Be carfeful. Remember (if its true) that you enjoy driving the car more then anything else.

Yikes. Brendan...you go, dude. I wish my sharky was all nice and polished and painted in the engine compartment...

And I might do the intake in some manner, it's definitely gonna be taken off to be cleaned, if nothing else. Maybe I'll wire-wheel it or something, or take it out to be blasted.

But it looks pretty good on the outside...and I miss driving my shark...

Definitely can't deal with a protracted voluntary separation during the summer months. And now I have to send my injectors off, too...I'm getting impatient already.
