I'm in the middle of a TB/WP job and also have new intake gaskets and hoses to deal with.
Does anyone know of someone in the Virginia area who has powder coated our intakes or cam covers?
The factory paint on my GTS intake has a big flake out of it and is lifting on one side, about 6 inches long. For a powder coat or repaing, I guess all of the original paint has to be removed. Any suggestions on this process. The metal seems a bit rough underneath the factory paint.
Any suggestions on colors? I'm leaning toward factory look or a grayish silver. The body color is black, brake calipers are yellow powder coat.
If the paint is loose and flaking...Bead Blasting will generally knock it off...if not...they make an Aircraft Grade paint stripper that comes in an Aerosol can, that is some really strong stuff...just spray it on, give it a few minutes to work and then just scrape or wirewheel the old paint off...Then, be sure and rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. WEAR EYE PROTECTION, and rubber gloves and long sleeves. You DO NOT want to get any of the stripper on your skin, hair or in your eyes. First try yhr glass beadinig. This can be done at most any automotive machine shop for around $25-35 depending on the shop. If that takes it off OK...figure on $150-200 for the intake and around $100 or so more for the cam covers to be powdercoated. Colors are such a personal thing..hard to make a reccomendation, but on my Black car, I went with the Aluminum/Silver powder for my 86.5 intake manifold and it really turned out grreat.
Jeff, thanks for the info. With the problems I've run into so far (cam sprockets, etc), I might as well go all in and get the job finished the way I want it, ie, clean engine, new powder coat, no oil leaks.
I just had my intake and cam covers powder coated. The shop did a nice job of bead blasting the old, flaking paint and recoating. I had them coated a nice silver with a clear top coat. They really dress up the engine compartment.
After the shop you use blasts the finish off, the components need to be baked prior to coating. This is to out gas what ever builds up in the magnesium. If this step isn't done, out gassing will occur while your driving and ruin the integrity of the powder coating. I believe the temp the powder-coated magnesium is cured at needs to be lower to avoid warping your treasured components as well.
Someone recently had their cam covers polished, and after some discussion here, also clear coated - can't recall what they did to the intake if anything. Polished cam covers, silver intakes with the black would be a nice combo, but as Jeff mentioned it's a personal choice.

I hope you bought as part of your TB-WP refurbishing parts list...a NEW oil filler pipe base gasket / "O" Ring . NOT the cap...but the base gasket, this is where most of the external leaks originate, that make such a grimy mess over time at the front of your beautiful V8. (At least on S4 or earlier engines). I can't say for certain "anything" about GTS engines, but if the Oil filler Neck is gasketed, and bolted to the top of the engine block like on the earlier cars...I have NO reason to doubt the same leakage issues could be evident, and problematic . Anyhoo...its cheap protection against a leak messing up your piece of mechanical artwork (about $10 if I recall right) .. I tell you what, the Silver-Aluminum powdercoat, for the Intake, Oil filler Pipe, and Cam Covers... looks so nice on a Black car, it really adds some brightness, to the dark painted background, it practically "jumps out" at you when you pop the hood. A++ in the Bling factor, without going over the top and appearing "Ricey"...
Thats a LOT of Black... dont you think, Matt ?? Although the Silver or Yellow Porsche logo on a Black background "does" sound like it would look beautiful... Thats what I mean about the color combo recommendations...Colors, are such a personal issue...that its hard to tell someone else what you think would be the "perfect" combination for their car...It almost has to be a personal selection... What ever you choose Bill, I am SURE it will look fantastic, and you won't regret having done it.
I think with the silver wheels, your silver intake looks better than a black would. With the smaller GTS intake and Bill having black wheels with silver lips and yellow calipers, I don't think the black would be overwhelming. It would keep sort of a stealth with highlights theme going.
BTW, Bill if you find anybody, please post who. When we pull my engine, I want to PC the cam towers and intake. I'm considering buying a PC setup, but if I can find a good deal somewhere nearby that would be easier.
Still not sure on color yet, but leaning toward silver/aluminum and some sort of color for lettering.
Black cam covers and intake would just be too black, I think.....and yellow would be really over the top. I've got black intake tubes with yellow rub strips (see photo below) and yellow plug wires. I may have to photoshop some alternatives before I start.

i powercoated my intake and cam covers back in silver but they yellowed out in like no time and now look like a cheap DUB mobile from the hood. Why did this happen and what can i do for it not to happen next time i powder coat the little black devil?
khalloudy, I don't think your powdercoat should be doing that. Did you have a shop do it, or did you do it yourself? Not sure how many miles I've driven since having mine done, but they still looks as good as the day I picked them up. Did you have yours clearcoated? I could see an issue with the clear yellowing.
Yes, mine was done by a shop and it was clearcoated. They did it when they took off the intake and cam covers as they needed it to be redone so the gaskets can sit well... i was pretty dissapointed as the cam covers yellowed out within a couple of months, the intake was like 5 months later... now ther are all golden color what do you recommend?
They probably used spray paint clear coat and not PC clear coat, or else they didn't completely cure the clear. It shouldn't yellow. I'm not sure there's much you can do other than refinish them again. Maybe the guys at Motorsport in Utah have some other advice since they deal with PC engine parts on 928s.
